It matters a lot, but there are damping versions with 1 degree slope and they don't sound good.

i really like the hard composite mat that's included w/my oracle delphi, that has this slope. i would not use any aftermarket mat w/o this slope, if i could avoid it.

have you ever had experience w/the oyaide composite mat? it's one of the few i know of that's sloped and affordable. (they also have a spendy metal mat.)

Yes I know of it, and was specifically steered away. My friend who recommended stainless steel said it sounds bad.

thanks for the tip. i found a cheap ($25 shipped) mat from an old technics sl-5 that's slightly concave, but not uniformly smooth. it fits perfectly on my fairchild 411. i was wondering about something a bit fancier, but i suspect a larger cash outlay than i'm willing to spend would be required.
