Look out Scan Speak, SEAS, SBA, etc! Here comes Purifi
« on: January 13, 2020, 08:38:05 AM »
Have you heard about this company? Have you read about their new midwoofer? Here are some tidbits:

PTT6.5W04-01A 6.5" midwoofer

https://purifi-audio.com/transducers/

https://purifi-audio.com/tech/

https://audiophilestyle.com/ca/reviews/purifi-ptt65-woofer-and-1et400a-amplifier-technology-review-r866/

I spent over an hour reading up on this driver, and I must say I'm excited.  :yay2: I have found myself thinking I ought to contact someone about creating a two-way speaker with this midwoofer.

I do need another speaker, right guys? I'm sure of it. Help me out here.  :thumb:

Very interesting. Sounds like fun. -3db at 32 HZ in room is VG for its size.

seems you don't even need to do much creating.  purifi has already updated its kit that was reviewed in the article:
https://purifi-audio.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/SPK5-App-Note.pdf
i'm wondering what a pair of subwoofers would sound like, w/6 or 8 of these drivers per side.  and maybe also use purifi's passive drivers in a slotted port configuration?   8)

$350 ea for the woofers, ~$250 ea for the tweeters, plus expensive x-over parts.  won't be super expensive, but won't be cheap, either...  big savings for bulk purchases - the woofers drop $100 for 8 or more...  (i'd suspect the same's true for the tweets...)

somebody might, but not me.  it's just not in my nature to spend $3500 on a pair of new speakers. the speakers i am presently listening to now retailed for $9200; i don't remember exactly what i paid for 'em.  something like $1300 and a modded mcintosh mr65b?

The Purifi is a nice driver for sure.
...but I see no audible advantage over the Dan Wiggins designed 7" Anarchy, which actually has slightly more clean stroke LF output capability.
Where the Purifi excels is measured mid band distortion...at levels uncorrelated to either audibility...or preference.
Looks great "on paper" though. For many, that's enough.

cheers,

AJ

i can see why they sell out, at those prices.  i need to investigate tapped horn subs w/these.  there's a build flat to 25hz w/one that i've seen, but flat to <20hz would be better.

thanks, aj!

You're welcome Doug. I do recall some tapped horn subs using these, out there somewhere. But they are solid up to mid frequencies for 2 way use as well..with a competent XO of course.

cheers
