Title: Speaker Designs
Post by: rollo on April 23, 2021, 01:15:55 PM
Ya have a favorite design ? Two way, Single Driver, Planar, Electrostatic ? and why. I prefer single driver and two way designs for their simplicity and cohesiveness. A linear presentation.

I haven’t been very creative over the years trying different designs, although nowadays, I sure wish I had done so. Basically have just used two ways and MTM, with the exception being the Shahinian Diapasons.

I’d love to try a Spatial or Rethm, for example, but the price to satisfy my curiosity would be too steep. There’s also the issue of weight with some of these designs. I just don’t want to deal with that at my age.

There is no one single solution. I prefer dynamic speakers, no need to be complex 3 way max. i like ribbon for detail but generally they dont have the dynamics of a conventional speaker. I think electrostatics dont have enough meat on the bones for me personally. no soul. Planars can have a sonic signature that I dislike.

Designs that use large drivers are preferable to me. I’ve done the smaller multiple bass driver designs and I just prefer the meatier presentation of a large driver. In the same vein, I’ve always liked 2 ways that use a large driver and I don’t mind the trade off of less detail of said driver at higher frequencies. Paper and paper composite drivers are my preference. The AMT tweeter in my Legacy Focus was my favorite sounding high frequency driver.
I have a friend in Florida that can’t get enough treble and has opposite tastes in reproduction. It’s not an age thing; I’ve known him since we were 12, and it’s always been his preference. To each his own...

I get you.

You are talking about what I call "sense of scale".

There are small speakers that can reproduce essentially full range frequency response.  They cannot however, move the volume of air necessary to move our perception to the suspension of disbelief that gives an illusion of reality.  This is why I prefer high sensitivity systems capable of moving a lot of air in the appropriate frequency ranges.  GR Research open baffle subs absolutely rule with extension down into the 'teens...  An experience, for sure!

Extended range open baffle planar over OB servo subs.

OB Push-Pull planars and OB servo subs just sound like music in its original space to me when done correctly.

Dropping off a Berning EA-230 PA with David to get checked out and do the auto bias mod. Should be an interesting contrast to the Orchard Audio Starkrimson monoblocks driving the planars.

I'll just have to live with my old box speakers that lack anything bigger than 6 1/2" woofers.  With neither huge drivers or Servo Subs.... poor, poor me.

Good responses so far. Scale and moving air is another perk from larger speakers. At times I miss my Pipedreams speakers for that reason. However the timbre, harmonics and linear presentation is the key for me.

Please, cash only.  Wife needs to know nothing about anything involving stereo and money.   :thumb:

It's more of I don't ask why she needs more shoes, and she doesn't ask why records come in the mail.
You just don't fix it if it ain't broken.

Liking the Fyne Audio F-12 and F-1o models. My buddy just bought the 300 stand mount. Unreal midrange and top end. Under $500 54db at -3db point. Not a Fyne dealer. www.fyneaudio.com

I like my test speakers, a 2 way design with an inward firing 12" woofer crossed over at ~170hz to a modified full range driver (frd). The woofer I wanted had specs that required a large box, 4.5 cu ft in my case. The overall design provides several advantages.

1. As mentioned in an earlier post, a cohesiveness of the sound from a single driver across the ultra sensitive
midrange frequencies.

2. The crossover, and FR abnormalities which occurs, is away from the most sensitive part of the ear, a very general 2khz to 5khz range.

3. The doppler effect is minimized vs a crossover higher in frequency.

4. The old natural big box bass is simply superior imo. I have never heard a small box design that sounded
right, all the way down to the deepest bass.

Cheers

steve

ps. My speakers are 11 inches wide.

Well I am back to a two way stand mount for now. Prestige 1. New room is only 12x 21.

I have written earlier about the audio hell I've been in for some time now.
taking the advice of someone (and have to have floor standers) I got a pair of Fyne F502.
The guy also got a pair of F501SP in for me to listen to. Neither had any break in and I went with the 502 due to the amount of air they could put out. I liked the 501SP but felt like it was working harder to produce the sound (even though it was better) than the 502. My previous speakers had a pair of 10s on each side so I was used to and like a room that's literally energized. I tried to like the 502 but after six months and trying everything I could think of to help with the sound took a 500 hit and took em back. Well, in sticking with the same vendor (would lose more money if I didn't), listened to other speakers. Walked out the door with the 501SP for a trial run at home. As they broke in they got better sounding. The Magnesium tweeter got rid of it's brightness and I learned to listen to them differently. Now getting to the subject, I have never had speakers with the driver arrangement like the Fynes and while my older speakers could really fill a room (my version of Grateful Dead) the wall of sound doesn't have nearly the sound separation and detail and depth the 501SP have. I did end up paying quite a bit more than I wanted to but haven't been looking at speaker pricings for over 25 years and hope not to for another 25.

After the circuitous quest you were on trying to find a replacement driver, I'm glad you got one that works for you.

My might want to try moving the speakers around to get a little more boundary reinforcement in the lows.
