One of the most under rated speakers of our time. The new Strata 2 with sub appear to be even better and less expensive than the Ref 3.5 . www.galloacoustics.com. Just may be one of the best options for lifestyle and smaller rooms.
I am not a dealer of Gallo.

Having lots of experience with both, I prefer the 3.5, though with enough fiddling the Strada/TR-3D combo can come very close, and allows a bit more flexibility due to the form factor.

I think Stradas, with a pair of TR-3D subs, could probably equal the 3.5s, as you now have an equivalent driver complement, and you can set a sub with each Strada.
I know that low frequencies are "non-directional" but I think getting sound source equivalent for left and right really helps.
A "Woofer" isn't really the the same as a "Sub-Woofer", and in this case, the TR-3D is functioning as a Woofer. As are most "Sub-Woofers" in 2.1 systems these days ;)

That combo should be heard IMHO. For me there are only a few speakers that deserve my attention. Gallo, Spatial, Rethm, Fritz, Analysis, Martin Logan and QLN.
However bang for the buck is Gallo, Spatial and Fritz.

Had a pair of Gallo Nucleus solo speakers years back. One of the most natural sounding speakers I've ever had; Dynaudio driver and a 180 degree aluminum tweeter if I remember correctly. Weird looking but fantastic sounding. Should never have sold them.

I always liked the 3.5 reference.

Have never heard Gallo at a friend’s or a show. Per the website, he designed his first speaker at age 14.

Had a pair of Gallo Nucleus solo speakers years back. One of the most natural sounding speakers I've ever had; Dynaudio driver and a 180 degree aluminum tweeter if I remember correctly. Weird looking but fantastic sounding. Should never have sold them.

I still have my early set of Nucleus Solo speakers with the Polyethylene enclosures. Were yours the Poly or Aluminum? I had a set of the early References as well first in Poly, which I then had upgraded to the AL enclosures. I really loved those, but sold them to purchase the 3.0 Reference, which I have since upgraded to 3.5 status, and I love these too. I do love my Gallo speakers :)

In the late 90s I owned the model in the middle photo. I believe they were called the Nucleus Reference 2. I owned that same pewter color and also had a champagne colored pair. They were beautiful in a kindof unique industrial way and sounded great. Never should have sold them.
Apart from my subs it's the only pair of Gallos I've owned so I can't say, but I've read comments from those that have owned several models, including more current ones with better WAF, that these earlier versions are the best he's produced.
PS: I believe the cylindrical tweeter had 330 degrees dispersion, not the 180 mentioned earlier.

I went to an Audio Syndrome meeting 5-10 years ago, and I'm sorry I don't know the member's name, but he was using Gallo speakers and I think Mapleshade wires. It was a blast. Really driving and so much fun to listen to. I bought several cd's I heard that night- so much fun.

You're correct on the naming, and I feel the same, though I'm very happy with my Reference 3.5 speakers.

I think the Aluminum enclosure Solo, was probably the ultimate speaker Anthony designed. I think the TWW configuration of the early Reference designs, and their minimalist (lack of a) crossover, combined to cause a very slight out of phase with the tweeter and lower woofer. The more minimal TW design of the Solo escaped this. And the Aluminum enclosure just had a more clear and transparent sound than the Polyethylene offered.

B&O has produced many speakers (whole systems even) with unusual form factors. Not sure about a speaker with a simple round enclosure though...

Barry, mine were aluminum and boy I wish I had those back. Paired with upgraded Quicksilver 8417’s they were very intimate and lifelike.

I just shake my head every time I hear my Buddy's Spheres modified by Mapleshade. Lifelike is correct. It is an ALL Maplshade system from TT/PRE/ DAC to Amps using Omega Micro Cabling. Hi Sydney.

Well, there's a photo of the poly enclosure Solo in my earlier post on this thread. Note that you call the speakers "Ref 2s", the 2 was for the second iteration, not 2 spheres. I have the original add flyers form both the early and second gen Gallo speakers.
I purchased my early versions directly from Anthony's basement in Brooklyn in '92 or 3. I had my references upgraded to Ref 2s at his modest factory in Brooklyn in '95 or 6, as things were going well, and he'd moved out of his basement. I can try to scan the flyers and post them here. I may have some more personal pictures as well, but as that was pre digital era photography, I may have difficulty putting my hands on the pix.
P.S. The naming convention was Nucleus Solo (single sphere) and Nucleus Reference (2 spheres).
There was also a Nucleus Minor, that used a concentric MidWoofer-Tweeter (similar to many KEF speakers. I think it was actually a KEF driver).
