Cheap Fuses and Nano Donuts
« on: June 15, 2021, 11:51:55 PM »
Anyone try these?

I want to try these Bussman fuses from MCRU

https://www.mcru.co.uk/product/silver-plated-bussmann-fuses-2/

Might be cheap enough per piece.

Also, these nano donuts that go on top of toroids from Mad Scientist Audio. http://madscientist-audio.com/blackdiscusnanodonut.html

Paul having gold coating is not the answer alone. It is the fusible link size and material that makes the difference. Unfortunately the right ones cost $150. Synergystic Research Orange. I have the Mad Scientist Toroids.  Can send you a couple to try out if you like.

Check the size, as they are normally for UK power plugs that have a line fuse in the plug.

Probably not the standard 5x20mm or 1-1/4in x 1/4in fuse size.

Paul,
I’ve been thinking about trying fuses for a couple of years, but haven’t gotten around to it. Some years back, I mentioned fuses to a well-known manufacturer and also fuse holders as well. I told him I had never seen an upgraded fuse holder, and surprisingly, he told me he had never given it any thought. So it seems to me that we need not only a better fuse but a properly plated and treated fuse holder as well. Have you ever read anything about better quality fuse holders?

Hi Charles,

I've heard nothing but good things about the Synergistic Orange fuses, but not the most cost effective upgrade due to WAF. Wallet Acceptance Factor.   For my other amp, I'd need 8 of them...

As for the Donuts, I am interested, but how tall or thick are they? Maybe the smallest one would fit here?

Good idea. I never thought about the size, just the rating.

Hi Nick,  Haven't seen any threads about upgrading the holder as well. What do the better designed amps use? All I've ever seen are the same plastic housing ones with very ordinary-looking contacts.

Hi Paul,

I haven’t seen the insides of any new amps recently since our audio club disbanded in Vegas a couple of years ago. I think I’ll do a little bit of research on fuse holders and see what’s out there. I’m still curious about fuses, but if I ever brought that up at the Van Alstine forum at AC, I would get a lot of flack for  it… i’m guessing I would need two or three fuses for my SET 120.

Thanks, Jack. Synergistic fuses are too pricey an experiment on an amp I paid < 1 k for..

I will revise my post.  I looked in one of my UK style plugs and it looks like a 5mm x 20mm size slow blow fuse.

OK. There are silver plated fuse holders available if desired. Malloy the donuts will NOT fit on the toroidal shown. The circuit board will get in the way. Nick I would buy [1] for power to start.
