Buy a bag of wood chips (around $6.00) in whatever variety from Home Depot, Lowe’s, local store, etc. This bag will last seemingly forever.
Take a generous handful or so, around 1-2 cups. Start to soak in hot water for an hour or longer, then put the chips into some aluminum foil which will get loosely wrapped to allow the smoke to escape. The foil package gets placed under the cooking grates near or over a burner- do this prior to lighting the grill.
This is one of those things, like soldering, that takes a few tries to get it where you want- you can use less chips if you’re just cooking up a few chops, more if you’re indirectly roasting a chicken or ribs for a couple of hours.
If you don’t have the time to soak for long, fifteen minutes works too.
I like heavy duty foil, it is easier to work with in this situation.
Cast iron smoker boxes are sold and also work well- though they cost 15-30 dollars.
