8 bills!!! No thanks. I hope to be spending that much Thursday on a new phono pre.

I've got a few shaded dog pressings, never realized they were something special, probably because they are filthy. Time to run them through the cleaner.

I think I once had the Power of the Orchestra in my hand, and put it down as the title made me think it was a gimmick. Oh well.

I have this as well, but my copy is filthy. Haven't tried playing it since I got the VPI cleaning machine.

The Power of the Organ

Original RCA "Shaded Dog" Vinyl. 1S/1S pressing

If you really want to freak out take a look at this A'gon listing. This guy is selling both this album and the companion Power of the Orchestra.

The asking price...are you ready for this.....$800 !!!!

I also have "The  Power of the Orchestra" , but unfortunately it is a Chesky reissue and not the original shaded dog.  :(

Brahms Concerto No. 2: Sviatoslav Richter - Piano, Erich Leinsdorf/Chicago Symphony Orchestra

A decent records but not up to the level of greatness achieved by other releases in the Living Stereo series.

I had a great experience with Erich Leinsdorf about 20 years ago. I was in Cleveland on business and went one night to see Leinsdorf conduct the Cleveland Symphony. He had just finished the final piece and a woman in about the 5th row of the orchestra jumped up and started heading out to beat the crowd. Leinsdorf stopped taking his bows, quieted the audience and said "Excuse me mam, where do you think you're going? We're not done playing yet. Everyone in the house (save one) burst into laughter and the woman slinked back into her seat where she remained with a grump on until the end of the last encore.

McNeely-Levin-Skinner Band: After Midnight

A live to Two-Track Recording from Sheffield Labs.

This album was supposed to be a direct -to-disc followup to the group's first bluegrass release on Sheffield, "Confederation." However during the sessions Lincoln Mayorga and Doug Sax could not get two complete sides that they were happy with from both a musical and a technical standpoint, so the direct to disc project was canceled and this album was put together by piecing together various songs from the tapes run at the same time as the  D2D cuttings.

Stravinsky - Petroushka: Ansermet/L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande

180g Vinyl reissue

This one has it all. Great music, great performance, great sound, great pressing.

Once again reminds me why so many Ansermet/OSR recordings remain at the top of my pile.

Stravinsky initially conceived the music for Petrushka as a kind of burlesque combat between the piano and orchestra. The piano was to play the role of the puppet that exasperated the orchestra with its diabolical sequences. The accompanying orchestra was to retaliate in force leading finally to a climax in which the puppet collapses. The music that ultimately emerged elaborated a story of puppets that were actually more human than their puppetmaster ever imagined. Although the primitive rhythms and kaleidoscopic colors initially gave the conductor and ballet troupe difficulty, the work was premiered June 13, 1911. Although Pierre Monteux conducted the premiere, Ernest Ansermet has always been closely associated with Stravinsky's music. He was among Stravinsky's circle of friends in Paris prior to World War I and first played excerpts from Petrushka in Geneva on January 12, 1915. This performance of Stravinsky's Petrushka was recorded at Victoria Hall in Geneva between October and November of 1957. The Decca engineers, led by Roy Wallace, set up a tree with three Neumann KM-56 microphones. The signal was routed through a three-channel vacuum tube mixer, without noise processing or gain riding, to an Ampex stereo vacuum tube recorder.

Vol. 2 the best of Wes Mongomery

Original Verve Vinyl

Pulled this one out of the dollar bin and was disappointed to find that even after cleaning on the VPI machine it still haqd much more surface noise that I would have expected given its visual appearence.  :(

You can't win them all.

Ray  Charles: The Entertainers

Swiss record company Joker Tonverlag AG put out a whole series of CD called "The Entertainers" I have about a dozen of them most of which I got from street vendors in NYC. They coversuch artists as Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Elvis Presley. All have excellent sonics and nice musical selections. I have never gotten one from this series that I wasn't happy with. Most people have no idea what they are so the most likely place to find one would be in the dollar bin. They are not easy to come by, but if you ever see one I would suggest picking it up.
