Greg Osby, who has recorded in a variety of settings (sometimes using hip-hop rhythms and rap), sticks to acoustic jazz on this relaxed, dry and often melancholy set, performing seven originals and two standards. In addition to the basic quartet/quintet (which sometimes utilizes the vibes of Bryant Carrott), five other musicians (most notably the acoustic guitar of Marvin Sewell) add color to some of the ensembles. Osby (who also plays some fine soprano in a sound derived from Wayne Shorter) has long had a very original improvising style, and his subtle solos on the date are continually interesting, although pianist James Williams (in top form) sometimes steals honors. None of the originals have particularly memorable melodies, but this CD acts as a good introduction to Greg Osby's playing. ~ Scott Yanow

There are times when something new comes along at once familiar and yet completely original. The album `Start to Move' from Elizabeth Shepherd Trio is just that. But what's more she has added her own unique blend of jazz-funk, soul, blues, and samba to the fundamentals of Jazz The album, `Start to Move' is Elizabeth's debut with Do Right Music, a label which seeks out new talent playing music that is out of the ordinary, and marks the inaugural release of the "Do Jazz" series. Co-produced with John Kong of the Movement Collective, established DJ and Do Right label boss, Elizabeth has put together a mix of original tracks and timeless classics. Her lyrics sing to us her struggle to find a place in a dynamic yet crowded jazz scene, as well as drawing on stories of love and life. From the jazz funk of `Reversed' to the samba beats of `Melon', the hip hop influenced `George's Dilemma' and the swinging modal of `Roots', the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio has given us music that seems effortless in its perfection, displaying her talents and the remarkable chemistry she shares with her band to never compromise her style for those seeking tradition.

Bird, Lover Man

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJrhOjvDbtg

Soon after he went to jail for 10 days, then rehab for 6 months, during which this recording was released. Lover Man was a huge hit for Bird, but he was ashamed of his poor performance while strung out and never played it live again.

I lived in Thousand Oaks, CA in 91. One day my fiance and I were driving along the highway and I suddenly saw the sign and swerved into the empty parking lot of Camarillo State Hospital. My fiance played alto and knew who Bird was. It made an impression on me to see the place for myself. It was on the shore, up on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It closed in 1997. Rehab was unheard of in 1946, the facility was rare back then, but it extended Bird's life.

Birdflight is a radio show about Bird on WKCR every weekday morning at 8:20, for the last 30 years. I stream it on a Sonos timer. It plays his entire recorded history over and over.

“Pariah’s Pariah” is a superb showcase for these two Saxophone giants. These gentlemen along with the astounding rhythm section of Michael Formanek and John Arnold have produced a powerful recording that instills hope and assurance for the future of Modern Jazz. Stefan Winter of Winter & Winter continues his superb track record of producing quality product that is essential listening for the serious Jazz collector/audiophile. “Pariah’s Pariah” hits the high mark and won’t disappoint. Highly Recommended...http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=3447

James Moody...Last Train from Overbrook

Listened to this last night.

This was Moody's first album after spending time in rehab in NJ in 1958.  Not sure if this was an answer to 'Relaxin' at Camarillo" or if it was simply part of the jazz culture that forced genius musicians to systematically destroy themselves.  Fortunately, Moody made it through and lived a great life, passing away just this year.

Romantic and subdued bigger band music.  Features Moody on Alto, tenor and flute.

Cool stuff, Acid.  Never heard that before.  I like it.

How sad that their music has been posted for nearly 2 years and only received a dozen or so plays.  Justin Bieber is played dozens of times each day in every city.  The world is an unjust place.

Have you heard anything from Earthworks, Bill Bruford's band?  They have a similar feel.  Bruford, despite his Prog history, is truly a jazzer at heart.  His creativity (and jazz influence, believe it or not) is what helped Yes and King Crimson stand out and above the Prog world.  Don't hold it against him.
