Another Boston bebop trumpeter. My mentor and friend Alan Dawson, also from Boston, used to jam with Joe Gordon, said they had so much fun together, never needed bass or piano. Joe died years later while sleeping alone in an abandoned house in L.A. that "caught on fire."

Reminds me of my Chet Baker autograph, signed in 1981. It reads, "Richard, you picked a hard way to go. Good Luck, Chet Baker"

Early jazzy happy Maynard with west coast buddies from Kenton's band, with gorgeous writing by Willie Maiden. This is the earliest album I remember getting "fully immersed" in, probably age 10. Record changer set to repeat, hour after hour, year after year. Maynard played my junior high school in 78 on the "Rocky" tour (Conquistador.) Peter Erskine was on drums, he broke a stick on his solo, I climbed up on the stage after the concert to get the tip. My brother toured with Maynard one summer on Big Bop Nouveau tour.

Edit: One little trivia few people know, Wayne Shorter was playing with Maynard's band at a summer festival when Lee Morgan invited him to join Art Blakey.
