Title: What you you think about switch boxes?
Post by: S Clark on March 10, 2022, 01:10:23 PM
I'm thinking about a Luxman switch box to run two tonearms to a phono pre... saving a phono pre and an interconnect.  Noise??

More than noise.  Even coin silver switches degrade the SQ.  Better to swap interconnects...

Thanks, Dave.  I feared that might be the case, and hoped you'd have an opinion.  Currently I have two tonearms in each of two systems... each with separate phono preamps and cabling.  I was hoping to simplify the mess.  :(

I have to agree with Dave on this one. An at the tonearm has to be the absolute worst place you could possibly put a switch. With the amount of gain used in a phono stage every little bit of noise and sound degradation would be amplified into a much bigger problem than in other parts of the system.

I've got each arm on its own phono pre and set of cables to the preamp.  Which means that only one of my cartridges goes to my best phono stage.  I currently have my mono rig going to a little Vista... not bad, but not as good as some of the others.  Guess that's the way it will stay for a while.

My God man, what were you thinking?!

Well, I was hoping to clean things up a bit.  My systems sprawl out more than I like (and certainly more than my wife likes).  Also, I saw a video of a high end system with the Luxman switch in it that made me wonder.

I was being funny. Hope I didn’t offend.

Of course it was funny, but it was also a good question.  I knew that it was probably a bad idea, but when a fellow with a much pricier rig than mine had one in place, I thought I'd ask.  Knowing that Dave is a guy that polishes every contact, I was hoping he'd chime in... and he did. I also thought Charles might actually have tried one and would advise.  It's one of the things that make our little forum valuable to guys like me.
Funny thing is that a local audiophile friend wants me to tell him what I found, since he was thinking along the same lines.  He is one of those guys that likes to change stuff out all the time, and was looking to leave another table set up.

Too bad you can't borrow one and find out how bad it is (or isn't... you never know in the wonderful world of audio!)

Cheers,
Pete
