Nice choices Tom!

That Sony Brubeck set - not much early stuff? I love early Brubeck!

My fav 1812 is Abbado/Chicago on Sony in 1990. It seems like a pretty loud mix overall, but the cannons do still protrude, seems just right. The cannons are shot outdoors and the echos from the surrounding buildings or hills can be heard, very cool!  Let me know if you want to try it.

Yes, I think that is the one. That says released in 1991, mine says recorded 1990. Mine is a 6 CD set of all Tchaikovsky's symphonic works, minus the ballets. My box artwork is different, but I think this what it looks like now. A great set with Romeo&J, Symph 4, and Voyevoda all blowing the roof off.

A review of 1812 from Amazon.com:
"The Chicago Symphony has always had a great brass section, but this is the proof. Who cares if it's not musical? When the trombone section completely obliterates the rest of the orchestra during the 1812it is just glorious! And in Marche Slave when the low brass gets theCzarist National Anthem, CharlieVernon takes the Bass Trombonepart down the octave and blasts overthe tuba deep in the pedal range! Like I said, it may not be completelymusical, but it's a testament to what can be done."

Beethoven's birthday was yesterday. Had he lived, he would be 244 years old   :?

Today I was listening to my favorite Beethoven CD:

The very best performance of Violin Concerto ever made, and the very best Triple Concerto ever recorded. Absolutely awesome in every way. These two works were recently put together on a single CD. It is available used for $0.01 (plus ship ;) ) I think this must be the best value in the history of the known universe.
