I heard a track from this a year ago, one cold winter night driving back home late from stereofool's house. Full moon, driving over the causeway across the big lake. The haunting Part music made it a memorable experience. Put it on my wish list when I got home and now finally enjoying it. It's weird but I like it!

Nothing weird about enjoying good music.

Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 9
Dmitry Shostakovich (Composer), Yakov Kreizberg (Conductor), Russian National Orchestra (Orchestra) | Format: Audio CD

With a tip 'o the cap to richidoo, nothing like a Russian composer played by a Russian conductor.

Crank that MF! Especially the end of 5th.

Sadly, Kreizberg  passed last year.

...with Kreizberg.  Two masters at play. His final recording, passed 5 months later.

Thanks Rich - that's a very nice recording of Shosty.

Crank that MF! Especially the end of 5th.

Russian Violin Concertos
Julia Fischer (Performer), Alexander Glazunov (Composer), Aram Khachaturian (Composer), Sergey Prokofiev (Composer), Yakov Kreizberg (Conductor), Russian National Orchestra (Orchestra) | Format: Audio CD

Since Pats not on till 4, lets listen to somemore Russian classical. This young lady has an amazing pedigree, I hope my system does her justice.

Heifetz
Walton Violin Concerto conducted by Walton
Castelnuovo-Tedesco Concerto 2  conducted Wallenstein

RCA Victor Red Seal LP mono, perfect, clean
Sound quality just OK. There is a worn triode somewhere in the chain that growls on loud orchestra passages. Music is awesome.

GoodWill store, $1 :)

A great record. Given to me by my friend and AN member SteveB, whom we have not seen online in a long time.

This is one of my favorite CDs. I love Respighi, right up there with Beethoven and Prokofiev for me. He is so clever, humorous, wise composer, and a skilled orchestrator. Pines is his most famous masterpiece and this is one of the best performances and recordings ever made. Belkis is rarely recorded but an awesome work. Played by America's best symphony, and one of her best conductors. Grammy nominated for best engineered recording. The sometimes annoying 'bigger than life' sound of some Reference Recordings is tamed down a bit on this.

Bud Powell - Portrait of Thelonius

A great album from Bud in Europe. He plays well through difficult changes on his originals, takes long interesting solos, sounds healthy and happy. Band is tight, his typical french buds. This is THE best sound quality Bud Powell recording. I 1st heard it on the radio, I called in to ask who is this new modern player who sounds like Bud? That's how good the recording is. The record is out of print, but I found one used a few years ago. I have put this on at GTGs a couple times, even the non-jazzers sit and dig the whole thing.

Recorded in Paris for Columbia on 12/17/61, my parents were married but one month! haha  Klook and Michelot on board.
