Notes: CDR received in db.etree.org trade circa 1/07; EAC/FLAC by jagraham84 circa 12/18/11.  An audience source is in the db but I could not find any evidence of the SBD circulating in FLAC previously.  CD Wave Editor was used to track the songs that segued into each other as they came like that on the CD.

Source 1: Previously circulated Sbd flac's (known as a Cassette Master transfer)

Source 2: older unknown generation Sbd cassette, used as filler.

Transfer Lineage:
TDK-SA 90 > Sony Deck TC-WE 475 > JVC XL-R2010 CD-RW > Soundforge 9 > WAV > TLH [SB's aligned] Flac level 6

Traders Den 3/14/15

Transferred, Channels Balanced, Editing and Tracking by George [kingrue upload 427]

=============================================================

I have an old cassette copy of this Sbd, but was missing the 2nd tape. My tape ends with "True Love" from the 2nd set.

I wanted to track down another copy of it. I asked long time JA collector Rick Martin if he could supply me with another version.
He was happy to send me what he had.

Once I had those flac's I began to realize that my cassette copy had additional material on it.  I decided to use my cassette as a filler where it was needed.

I carefully compared the 2 versions I had in front of me and found quite a few differences.

My cassette is inferior quality to the flac version, but the parts I did use as patches did improve this as a whole.

My tape had the opening song "She Has Funny Cars". I used the entire track here and it runs seamlessly into the next track.

The flacs had a tiny tape cut between tracks 7 and 8.  I used a 12 second piece as filler at the beginning of track 08 "Solidarity".

The flacs on track 9 had a quick fade out after "Wooden Ships", then "Freedom" cuts in.   The song "America" was missing.

I used my tape source to patch in the missing song for track 10. Yet, noticeably lesser quality.

At the end of their first set after they play "Freedom", the flac source is cut off.  I added a 14 second snippet to the very end of track 11, when Grace says thank you and that she's going to the bathroom to read a full novel and be back in 15 minutes.  At this point Hot Tuna enters the stage and plays their 5 song set.

My tape contains the full Hot Tuna set (5 songs) in sub-par quality.  My tape then keeps rolling as Grace mentions Jorma and Jack at the end of their set, followed immediately with Grace and Paul starting the beginning of their set 2.  I don't hear a tape cut at all on my tape between Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane sets.  My Set 2 starts with a speaking intro, that seamlessly jumps to "True Love".  But we know there were 4 songs that preceded "True Love" at the beginning of set 2.

The Flac version is missing this intro portion of JA's set 2. I used a 90 second patch at the beginning of set 2 here. I made it a separate track 12.  It's just Grace and Paul talking before they start into "True Love".

I also performed a channel alignment.  What that means is, when I viewed the wave channels side by side, I noticed that the peaks weren't lined up together and that the right channel was running ahead of the left channel.  This can create a false delay effect.  Even though it's only milliseconds, for fidelity reasons, it's still an issue.  So I manually lifted the right channel and moved it back to make both channels run side by side perfectly even.

A couple other things to make note of: At the very end of Track 14 "Crown of Creation", the last 7 seconds are missing.
The band is supposed to sing together and hold a note until the end, but the recording is cut off.

During the middle of track 15 "White Rabbit", there are a couple quick tape cuts. These briefs cuts are at 0:57 and 1:18 min.

At this point my work here is done.

I will say this.  The last song of the night "Planes" is the most gawd awful song ever written by this band and should be stricken from their catalog. Don't you dare go to Youtube/Vevo and watch the video they made for it, you can never un-see it. You've been warned HA HA HA.

I'm sure somewhere out there, a JA collector probably has the full Sbd tapes.  At this point in time,  I don't know about any other sources.  I hope all you JA fans can appreciate this Combo version.

Comments:

- During the second encore the couple sitting behind me decided to have an argument. It's not too intrusive on this recording but it was extremely annoying on the night.  I did think about turning round and giving them a piece of my mind but that would have totally screwed up this recording.  As my mics are cards they didn't pick it up too much. As I had to sit sideways in my seat to face the stage this can be heard in the left channel.

Where were you sitting and from memory, how does the recording sound compared to the live event?

Very interesting.

Steely Dan
Live at Starplex Amphitheater
Liberated CD Silvers
September 2, 1994
Dallas, TX

Lineage:  Soundboard -> CD Silvers -> EAC ->
FLAC Frontend Level 8 -> Trader's Little Helper

NOTES:

Here is a fantastic soundboard recording from the 94 tour. The quality exceeds
that of Irvine '94 as that show is lacking in the bottom-end department.
This one more than makes up for it! Indeed, we have a great stereo spread and a
crystalline, transparent capture -- this may be the best sounding Steely Dan ROIO ever.
It is certainly in the upper echeslon. Plus, we have a great backing band and an even
better setlist.

Where did it come from? Well, this, along with some of the other more recent seeds have
been circulating overseas. We've managed to obtain some of the silvers as you've seen.
They are not cheap. This 2 disc set set me back over $100, personally. So long as the
skeevy sellers are selling, we'll be freely sharing until everything is tapped! And as
of the date of this writing, the well is certainly far from dry. Enjoy

Notes:

This is Kansas live at the Palladium during their Audio Visions tour, recorded here in it's entirety. It's an excellent and flawless radio broadcast, without any interference of an announcer or commercials. The beginning of the show is phenomenal: Wagner's Lohengrin is played over the PA and the band comes onstage in total darkness and blends in beautifully with the classical piece before kicking into Point Of Know Return. Sadly this tour is also the last one with the original line up, before Steve decided to leave the band. What makes this show very interesting is the fact they play one song of Steve's and one of Kerry's solo album back to back. It's kind of awkward to hear Steve's sing the lyrics of Mask Of The Great Deceiver. But so was it to hear Black Sabbath's Ronnie James Dio sing the studio version. Track one of the second disc is continued for some minutes on the second track, probably due to some bad editing by the manufacturer. It doesn't affect the listening though. Anyway, this show will be nice addition to your Kansas collection.

Enjoy!
