Danley Labs Horns
« on: December 22, 2010, 06:26:10 PM »
The Gedlee discussion reminded me of a couple days ago when I somehow came across these Danley pro audio horn speakers, that HT enthusiasts are raving about. They use complex geometry inside the horn (looks flattish to me  :-k ) and claim very low distortion, high sensitivity, and the ability to play a true square wave across a wide listening area, very difficult for a speaker. They use multiple drivers mounted in the throat and walls of each horn to achieve 60Hz-20kHz, I think it's intended for the gunshot crowd, but there are some comments about music playback on the web. One guy says it is too detailed for music, and he couldn't live with it longterm. HT guys want to hear Paltrow fart so detail is second only to dynamics. But I can't help wondering how a solo violin or Billie Holiday would sound, based on the technical claims of low distortion. Connect it to SET amp and see what it can really do, rather than the Onkyo receiver it will be used with in HT. I don't know if the designers acknowledge the problem of reflection inside the horn or address it, but they do claim that it emulates a perfect point source at most frequencies. With LF drivers aimed deliberately at the interior walls it seems like an alternate but serious approach to the problem of low distortion horn.

Note the lightbulb pictured for scale reference. They are not too heavy either.

They make bigger ones too, for your stadium.

Funny AVSforum discussion about this speaker, and audiophiles in general...  [-X

I think they are only $3k each, I say with my nose waving in the air, the true audiophile that I am. My wires cost more than those speakers! HA!

Please keep comments on topic. Reply to that AVS thread in that thread, or ignore. Thanks
