Believe it or not:  The Masterpiece Collection: Volume I -- Bach

Rich suggested Bach as a means of introducing myself to Classical Music!  I am trying!

Looks like some good selections. The quality of performance is very important part of enjoying Bach. Some musicians just do the motions, not feeling the connection, then it is pretty boring, same with Mozart. I am not familiar with any of those performers. So if it sounds a little boring, just try to focus on the melodies and counterpoint (how the different instruments interact together.)  I'll make a batch of bitchin bach for you.

Be careful about the St Matthews Passion at the end. That will put you in the grave with boredom, and some of the others are a little lightweight, but pleasant. The Brandenburg Concerto #3 is probably the coolest one on there and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

"Air out the G String"

Hi Robin.  George Harrison's son Dhani is also in the band, as well as indie musician Joseph Arthur.

Eric Clapton - 24 Nights.

Just got a '$99 special' Sherwood multi-format player for SACD duties. Can already tell it blows away the Samsung I was going to update as a Winter project, so the Samsung goes back on ebay.

Pick up a copy of Vivaldi "The Four Seasons", trust me, you've already heard parts off it a million times, mostly car commercials at Xmas.

Beethovens 5th and 6th.

Handel "The Water Works" is both good and accessible, the Telarc cd has great sound to boot, Sir Charles Mackerras conducting.

Ken,

If you are looking for something yo jumpstart a classical collection try the Reference Recordings release of Tafelmusik: Popular Masterworks of the Baroque

It is a really first class performance with that fantastic Keith Johnson Reference Recordings sound. Nice as a CD and really nice if you can get your hands on a copy of the 45 RPM vinyl.

This one somehow always keeps working its way back up to the top of the pile.  :thumb:

Agree about Beethoven's 5th.

Listen to the first movement.  Those familiar with Classical scoff at it as all-too-familiar, but it is a perfect piece of music. Find a good performance. There are so many: Bernstein,  Giulini, Osawa, Von Karajan to name a few. If you listen to the first movement (about 8 minutes, or so) and find yourself unmoved, then you will never be a fan of Classical music.   I think it's better to learn that from the outset than to torture yourself plodding through yet another Bach concerto.

If you like the first movement of the 5th, listen to the second and third and fourth movements.  Then listen to the fourth movement of Beethoven's ninth.  Still with us?  Try the whole ninth.  From there, the world of Classical is wide open to you.

I am sorry to get off topic but I would like to thank you guys for the Classical Recommendations.  When I attend a G2G and Rich puts on a classical cut I enjoy the detail of the music; however, since I am a stranger to classical music I don't have a real appreciation for the complexity. As my system and my I believe my ears have evolved I really want to make a serious effort to spend more time listening to classical.  Rich tells me that it is not compressed as are the popular rock and roll and jazz recordings.  Anyway, I look at this a a continued part of the audio journey.

Thanks again for the recommendations.

Ken
