Rick Wakeman: Journey to the Center of the Earth

I can remember hearing this for the first time on the ABC TV show "In Concert" that ran at 11:30 PM on Friday nights during my high school years.

(My copy is the Mo-Fi CD pressing, but not the gold version pictured.  :( )

Grateful Dead: American Beauty

Without a doubt, my favorite Dead album.   :yay2:

This copy is the Rhino/Warner Bros. HDCD reissue. The best sound of all the CD versions I have heard and it also contains not only the 6 bonus tracks listed on the cover, but also 2 hidden bonus bonus tracks as well.

Now that 70s Rock Weekend is over it's time to move on to something else.

Oscar Peterson/Michael Legrand: Trail of Dreams - A Canadian Suite

And which one of them is the Canadian? If you picked Legrand you'd be wrong (He was born just outside of Paris) According to the liner notes from this CD Oscar Peterson was born and raised in Montreal. I never pictured him as a native of the frozen north.

Ya learn something new every day....whether you like it or not!

BTW - real nice music. I can't really vouch for the sound quality since I am listening on my computer, but its a TELARC release, how bad could it be?

Oscar is a very well known Canadian.....in Canada. You could ask almost any Canadian over the age of 30 and most would know it. You are right however in that not many outside of Canada seem to know it. Never understood why? Maybe it's a generation thing? Most seem to know that Rush, Nickelback, The Tragically Hip and so on are Canadian but some of the older guys not so much.

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.4: Marin Alsop/Colorado Symphony Orchestra

Another nice Naxos selection. Marin Alsop was the Music Director of the Long Island Philharmonic for 5 years in the early 90s. She will be remembered for her youthful energy and her excellent pre-concert lectures.

George Benson: Songs & Stories

This should be a how to manual for all aging rockers. When I first put this CD on, the vocals sounded like Benson from a style point of view but the voice was different. As I listened a bit more I realized what was going on.AS he has gotten older Benson has lost some of the range in his voice from both and amplitude and a frequency perspective. So rather than try to fight mother nature he has modified his vocals by singing in a slightly lower key and limiting the dynamic range that he uses. While this sounds different than the Benson we heard in the 1970s recordings, it still sounds good, and retains his distinctive style. (I was playing it in the car when i pick up my son last night and he immediately commented "Who is this, I want to say its Gorge Benson, but the voice sounds different." Unlike some of the aging rockers we saw on tour this summer (like Ian Anderson and Meatloaf) who tried to sing off the same charts in their 60s that they used in there 20s and just sounded horrible, Benson has reworded his style and arrangements so as to make the most of the vocal abilities he has left. This a) prevents any further damage to his voice from stretching it to a place that it just does not want to go and b)allows him to continue providing his fans with a quality musical product. Way to go George!  :thumb:

Oh, BTW, the album itself was very enjoyable as well. It is a Concord Records release and enjoys the typical Concord high quality jazz sound and from a musical perspective it is pure Benson. A keeper in my book.

Frederica von Stade Sings Brubeck - Accross your Dreams (with Chris Brubeck and Bill Crofut)

Opera diva Frederica von Stade cross over intot he world of jazz vocals. I'm not a big opera fan, so some of the styling was not my cup of tea, although I did enjoy the cuts that included Chris Brubeck and Bill Crofut. Of particular note is a cut called "Blue Rondo - A Tribute to Dave" which is a vocal interprtation of the Brubeck classic.

Neil Diamond: Hot August Night/NYC

In spite of the rave reviews on Amazon, I thought this album was a horror show. Diamonds voice is not what it once was and unlike what I talked about in my Recent George Benson post Diamond does nothing to change his style. The most he as done was to liberally use background singers to try and cover up the parts that he is no longer able to do. It works marginally well, at best. Additionally the sound quality is rather on the poor side. the treble area is way over EQed making everything sound very strident and shrieky. It might sound OK on an ipod with $6 ear buds, but through my Thiels it was more like fingernails on a blackboard. If I want to listen to Neil Diamond I'll stick with the original 1973 Hot August Night.
