Freelance Whales - "Weathervanes"

Wonderful album.  One of my (and my kids') records.  Every song has a melodic hook and stands completely on its own while being woven into a loose and bizarre concept album.  A latter day progressive rock band, but in a different way than most of the imitators of the 70's giants.  This is progressive, but in a new vein...similar to, but denser than Sufjan Stevens; just as weird, but more accessible than Andrew Bird.  It is because of the Freelance Whales that my kids have finally opened up to listening to (and devouring) my old prog records.

Vanguard Jazz Orchestra: Live at the Village Vanguard

Sourced from NPR: http://www.npr.org/assets/img/2012/02/14/vjo-12_0034.jpg?t=1329244662

The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra has been playing at the Village Vanguard every Monday night since 1966.  They began as the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, with Thad on coronet and composing most of the tunes, and Mel, rock steady, carrying the beat so the band can swing.  Mel always left the solos to the players, it was his way.

When Mel passed away in 1990, the Orchestra continued on without him.  Their sound changed a bit, they now seem to take less risks, but they are still as tight as ever.  If you enjoy swinging hot big band, check out this recording on NPR.
