This is the CD that got me into high end audio.  It was so beautiful I just had to hear it on a better system than I had. Bad move...

One of the world's best quartets playing strongly flavored but highly assimilible music.

Now we know who (ore rather what) to blame.

10cc: The Original Soundtrack

  DCC 24k Gold CD

The Better Records web site claims that this gold DCC CD pressing has reference quality demo sound.I don't know if I would go that far, but it is a nice treatment of this 1970s rock workhorse.

Now on to the Russians. I've played this one to death, especially the Prokofiev, but it still entertains. The girl can play that fiddle.

Analogue Productions 200g Quality Records pressing.  I'm not at all impressed with the quality of the pressing.  Lots of physical flaws (loud pops and clicks) mar a very nice quality recording...this is the same thing that drove me out of my mind with Classic Records.

I'm going to keep a close eye on buyer feedback.  Chad is planning to reissue a lot of classic Verve jazz titles on 45 RPM 180g vinyl.  If they were being pressed by Pallas records then I would buy them without reservation.  But they will be on Quality Record Pressings, and if they turn out like this one then I'm really not interested.

The Procrastinator
Lee Morgan | Format: Vinyl

Seeing TMAZZ list some of his score from PREX reminded me I have 6 or 8 things I got from my last trip up to Shadowlight's still unheard. I thought this a score, but on cleaning it a see it a BN Classic reissue from '78, still, a great album so far.

Wow, I'm really surprised because my copy did not have a single click  or pop on it. The vinyl was dead quiet.

However I do have one suggestion. Play it through 3 or 4 times before you give up on it, even if you do so while playing a CD so you don't have to listgen to it. I remember when MoFi firsst started putting out records back in the day they always said that they didn't polish the stampers before pressing the LPs out of fear that the polishing while it would help get rid of ticks might also wipe out some low level details. They said that the ticks that would get polished out would also get removed by the stylus during the course of the first few playings. I do remember that to be true, so before you write of what is a realy good album from a performance and musical standpoint you might want to try "breaking it in" first.

In the past I found that some times it helped and other times it didn't, but the way I figure it, since you already have the LP it is at least worth a try. I hope it helps.

Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet

Prestige/OJC CD

Great album, but given the amount of time that Miles spent fighting substance abuse problems I thought it was in rather poor taste to put out a CD with a cover picture that looks like he is smoking crack. (I realize that this was the original cover, but given the problems he had in later life I for one would not be upset if the changed the cover photo in future releases of this album.)

Olivia Newton-John: Portraits: A Tribute to Great Women of Song

CD

Saw this in the new release section at the library and decided to give it a whirl. ONJ's voice is still on good form and the performances are not bad, but this tribute album space is a crowded place to play in and her readings just don't seem to offer anything different or better than either the originals nor other tributes that are already out there. It's OK, but nothing that would inspire me to lay out money for (or dedicate rack space to.)

Lee Morgan: Charisma

New Blue Note Vinyl

Edit: Here is a strange update. The vinyl on this album is nice and quiet with the exception of the lead out grooves, which arfe noisey as hell. The main body of the LP is fine as are the lead in grooves. Not that I really care since the noise arfea is  not withing the real estgate on the disc tha contains music, it is just weird, that's all.

Jimmy Smith's Greatest Hits

Blue Note 2 LP Set

I found this 2 LP set in the clearance bin and when I pulled the LPs out to inspect them at first glance they looked like they were Deep Groove pressings. Unfortunately what looked like a groove was actually a ridge and the LPs turned out to be from the Liberty era. Sure it would have been incredible if they were deep grooves, but with great music on good vinyl for only $2 I'm still a happy camper.  :D
