Frank Zappa

Painter's Mill Star Theatre
Owings Mills, MD, USA

1981 11 15 (L)

--------------------

~~ With two "newly" discovered low generation SBD parts. ~~

Taped by: unknown
Part 1 contributed and transferred by: julsay (from a band member's friend's 90 minute cassette)
Part 2 contributed by: pbuzby (from a non-Zappa trader's CD)
Speed correction advice by: flambay
Edited by: Pittylabelle

--------------------

Available tapes according FZShows:

127 min, SBD, A

--------------------

This copy: 127.24 min, SBD, A

--------------------

About this edit:

From the first part of the 1981 11 15 (L) show there was already a SBD version of unknown generation from pbuzby's collection on the Zappateers tracker. Recently someone sent pbuzby a surprise: a CD with a SBD recording of the second part of the 1981 11 15 (L) show, which was previously available only in the AUD version. Since 2020 04 29 there was also an upgrade SBD version of the first part of the show on TTD. These two "new" SBD versions are the basis of this newly compiled show torrent presented here.

Since there are no possibilities for patching, except for the really bad sounding AUD version, we decided to create a complete unpatched SBD version.

Unfortunately, there is also a downer: The track "Alien Orifice", especially the FZ solo, contains quite a few digital glitches - much more than in the rest of the second part of this SBD version. In the 3:18 to 3:25 range there were really bad digital glitches and also longer bad dropouts. I tried to correct these errors and reconstruct the missing parts.

Technical corrections:
Only the technically necessary corrections were made (please see lineage below).
As in old Zappateers tradition, no re-EQ or anything like that was added to the recording.

Audio restoration:
Dropouts in Alien Orifice FZ solo from 3:18 to 3:25 repaired.

Mono or Stereo?
This is a real stereo recording!

To preserve the sound of the original recording as well as possible:
NO fade-in or -out, NO track normalisation, NO soundfilter!

All work on the recording was done in 16/44.1.

In short: There is no music left out!

Pittylabelle, 2022 10 20

--------------------

Lineage:

SBD Part 1 (julsay, 2020 04 29):
Band member's cassette (probably a 1st gen copy) > Cassette copy made for band member's friend >
Band member's friend's cassette > Nakamichi Dragon > Sony TCD-5M (julsay's cassette copy) >
julsay's cassette copy > Nakamichi CR-7A > Sony SBM-1 > HHB CDR recorder

SBD Part 2 (pbuzby, 2022 10 07):
Non-Zappa trader's CD

The Who
7.7.1970
Tanglewood, Music Shed

Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, Keith Moon, Pete Townshend

Tangled Up In Who

Recording: Sound-board

Comments: Absolutely stunning 2 disc set. There are some minor sound deviations at the beginning of most songs and dialogue, but these are quickly corrected. There is a flaw in Eysight To The Blind which runs directly into Christmas (not listed on the back cover) without changing track numbers and the "change-over" suffers a minor drop-out and becomes muddled for approx. 2-3 seconds. My Generation becomes quite muddled half-way through. Between-song dialogue has been left intact which allows for a nice flowing feel to the show. This was the last show of the U.S. tour and also the last time The Who performed Tommy in it's (near) entirety in the U.S until the 25th Anniversary Tour in 1989. The packaging is quite impressive and features a beautiful laminated gatefold cover with picture cardboard inner sleeves. Disc one is red, disc two is blue, both state "Cool Engine"on them. Reference to the "Hiwatt" label is only made on the back cover. Get it, listen to it and hang on to this one.
