FG panel custom edges
« on: November 18, 2008, 06:26:59 PM »
How are edge details cut into those fancy FG acoustic panels? Like these from our sponsor, Sensible Sound Solutions:

I need to cut panels into a certain shape, with clean straight edges mitred to a certain angle. What tool can do that? I can't imagine ruining a nice table saw by cutting FG?

Is this saw (and steady hand) my best bet?

Also, can corning 703 FG panel be glued together on edge? What kind of adhesive?
Thanks for any input!
Rich

Hey Rich

Actually, what they do is resin harden the edges and then use a router to cut the detail on the edges.  You could likely replicate the angles with a table saw but the radius would be tough.

Also, those panels are an OC705 core, not OC703 (6lb vs 3lb density)

I just need flat miter edge, no roundover.

Can I butt glue edges together?
Thanks Bry!

You could try doing glued butt edges but my suspicion is that when you stretch the cloth to get it tight, you'd break it apart from the pressure.

Honestly, the easiest thing to do is put it in a wood frame and miter that.  The 703 will friction fit into the frame and you staple the cloth on the back.

OK, that sounds reasonable. Thanks a lot!
