No exaggeration, this is a ONE-of-a-kind Pre-Amp.  I have the first and ONLY official (serial#1) 12B4A based variable gain pre-amp that Gary Dodd ever produced.  It is just about two (2) years old and is in excellent shape.  (It was built in December 2012 and delivered in January of 2013)  Custom Cocobolo wood faceplate, remote and knobs.  The reason why this is such a rare and desired pre-amp is because Gary no longer makes variable gain pre-amps.  Another advantage of this model pre-amp vs. his older production units is that it uses 12B4A tubes which are much less expensive than the 6H30 model, especially if you're talking about N.O.S. 6H30's.

This pre-amp is one of the most neutral sounding pre-amps that I have ever heard in my system.  Even though it runs four (4) 12B4A tubes in it, it is extremely clear and clean sounding.  It's not "your father's Oldsmobile", if you're thinking of that old school "bloated" tube sound.  The Dodd is also quiet as can be by running "off the grid" via battery power.  Convenient remote controlled operation (volume only) makes this pre-amp a joy to own.

Original list price on this pre-amp was $2,500.  I am asking $1,500 or Best Offer for it, but will also include the necessary charger and battery with it.  Buyer pays shipping and insurance.

Good luck with the sale.
I have a preamp(actually two of them) that use this tube and I love them. My preamps use a very simple circuit to implement that tube and the tube is awesome sounding, one of the best preamps I ever heard in my system, next to the Dude preamp.

12B4 tubes are super cheap to play with as well

I agree with you regarding the 12B4A's.  The Dodd really is one of the most transparent and detailed Pre's that I've heard in my system.  I just needed to fine-tune my system a bit more in the direction I wanted due to overall synergy.

Some day I will regret selling this!

Just thought this may be of interest here. (This is something that Sleepyguy24 posted on another AN thread regarding the Audiogon Bluebook and finding compatible pricing for used equipment. - Thanks, Dean!)

"I had the Audiogon bluebook subscription some years ago before the change in regime and overhaul to the site. It was an ok tool in terms of getting the final prices of gear. Sometimes it would get skewed. An example that came to mind was McCormack gear. The bluebook couldn't differentiate between modified amps and stock ones. The bluebook had historical pricing of some of the DNA lines of amps appreciating in value when it was just modified amps being sold.

Also with Audiogon no matter what you list at you will get lowballed. People will pay what they want to pay. That is my past experience.

Below is a search I use to see historical listings on Audiogon. It doesn't give you a completed listing end price but it gives you what people listed their stuff at.

In google I search like this.

dodd preamp site:app.audiogon.com

It will then give me expired historical listings of any Dodd preamps if there were listings on A'gon for it. From there I'll look at as many listings as I want too and determine pricing from there.

From looking at the Dodd preamp expired listings prices SN's pricing on his Dodd preamp is a good deal.

Also I look on Ebay was well to get an idea on pricing. I use their completed listings search in the Advanced search section."

you should try listing it at Audio Circle, Gary Dodd used to have a big fan base over there, you might get more traction than here.

Maybe ask Danny Richie for help, he is Gary's friend and may have leads to help sell it

Also the price drop game is not very effective, it emboldens would be buyers to low ball you.
Offer it at a good price, a price to move it,  and it will move, unfortunatley good price means two different things to two different people.

It's on AC as well as Audiogon.  I have a solid offer on it that I'm trying to work out the fine details on, but it's not a done deal yet.  I felt the originally listed price (especially since it includes the trickle charger and the battery as a package) was very fair.  Knocking it down $100.00 was an attempt to stir more interest up on it.  I agree on your point about price-drops, but I don't expect to be doing more of them considering how good a deal this is already.

I'll contact Danny over at AC to see if he knows of anyone who may be interested.  As usual, thanks for your viewpoints.

Never mind ...just looked inside, massive caps, maybe bigger than need be, looks like 15uf and 10 uf, I am sure they could go down in size depending on your amp, but it still would be very expensive.
