I made a few new acquisitions...

The Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle (Original 1968 Date pressing)
The Zombies - Early Days (London UK Pressing that issues all of the Zombies early recordings on Decca)
The Beau Brummels - Introducing the Beau Brummels (Original 1965 Autumn Records pressing)
The Spencer Davis Group - Best of the Spencer Davis Group (Toshiba Japan Pressing)
Rush - Moving Pictures (don't know why but this album is getting hard to find in anything approaching decent.  There seems to be plenty of beat up copies around, however.)

I'll be interested in hearing what you think about the SQ on the Spencer Davis LP. Back in the 80s I picked up a Japanese import pressing of Dark Side of the Moon from the Toshiba Pro-Use series. I was ver excited about finding this since I had two Japanese Toshiba Pro- Use CDs (DSOTM and Abbey Road) that I thought had excellent SQ. Well to my surprise the SQ of that LP was among the worst DSOTM pressing I had ever heard. Never mind it was not as good as other Japanese LPs it was no good period. So I will be interested so see how Spencer Davis holds up.

In all fairness to Toshiba, I do have a number of D2D LPs that they did that sound wonderful, so I would hope that my DSOTM pressing was just and aberration and not indicative of what Toshiba couls and did do with other re-issue LPs.

Well, good news and bad news at the Crack House today. They changed their pricing policy and now all LPs and CDs are $1.41. While this is bad from the point of view of the LPs, which used to be 69 cents, the CDs were $1.91 and $2.42 before the change so how the price change effects you on any given day will depend on what mix of media you find.

And while I was a bit bummed out for a while that disappointment soon disappeared when I went through the rack and pulled out 5 mint Mercury Golden Import LPs. While many folks think that these are now up to the sonic standards set by the original releases, they are still damn good music with much better than average SQ. And even at the new $1.41 price , they were a steal.

I grabbed the following:

1) Wagner for Band - Fennell/Eastman Wind Ensemble **
2) Grainger: Licolnshire Posy- Fennell/Eastman Wind Ensemble **
3) Grainger: Country Gardens - Fennell/Eastman -Rochester Pops Orchestra **
4) Sousa: Sound Off - Fennell/Eastman Wind Ensemble
5) Respighi: Feste Romane/Church Windows - Dorati/Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra

** - These recordings are on the TAS Superdisc list, although not in this pressing

I also picked up A few other misc albums:

6) Pete Fountain - Stick Man
7) Aurthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops play the Carpenters Songbook (On Polydor)
8) A two disc set of Suites from Victory at Sea (1970 RCA Red Seal reissue, not the original Shaded Dog)

This last set is interesting  in that the two LPs contain all the music from the originally issued 3 LPs. The LP that contains sides 1 & 4 is a 4s/4s pressing and looks like it is a standard vinyl weight while the LP with sides 2 & 3 is a 2s/7s pressing on very flimsy vinyl reminiscent of the Dynaflex pressings.

I've been listening to a bit of garage rock and psychedelia on the few occasions where I have some time to listen to music.  I have a considerable selection on CD but I felt it was time to put more vinyl into the mix.  So I recently bought...

The Kingsmen - In Person (minty original 1964 Wand mono pressing)
The Standels - The Hot Ones! (minty original 1966 Tower Records stereo pressing)
The Turtles - Happy Together (Original 1967 London mono pressing)

And then a fistfull of Sundazed reissues and compilations

The Sonics - Introducing the Sonics
Kings Versus - Kings Versus
Strawberry Alarm Clock - Insense and Peppermints
The Remains - Remains
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
Various Artists - We're Gonna Change the World! The 60's Chicago Garage Sound of Quill Productions
Various Artists - 2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage And Psychedelia
Don & the Goodtimes - The Original Northwest Sound of Don & the Goodtimes
Mitch Ryder - Sock it to me!
The Pretty Things - Pretty Things

Today I was at DD's when he sold a both stereo and a mono copy of
the Beatles Butcher LP the stereo sold for $1000.00 because he says
that lp in stereo is more of a rarity than the mono. Plus it was in just
beautiful shape. The mono went for $200.00 and wasn't quite as nice
They were sold to a 31 year old who is a avid Beatles collector.

Here is my $14.00
1. Jerome Richardson ~ Midnight Oil
2. Oregan ~ Out Of The Woods
3. Scott Jarrett ~ Without Rhyme Or Reason
4. Russ Ballard ~ self titled    Promo
5. The George Shearing Quintet ~ Black Satin
6. Red Rider ~ Neruda                    Promo
7. Larry Carlton ~ Alone/ But Never Alone
8. The Stranglers ~ Dreamtime
9. 2010 ~ Movie Soundtrack

I haven't had much time for music or AN lately.  I miss both.

But that hasn't kept me from buying vinyl.  Here are my latest acquisitions:

Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong - Porgy and Bess (minty original Verve pressing)
Sarah Vaughan - Sassy (minty original EmArcy pressing)
Chico Hamilton Quintet - Chico Hamilton Quintet (minty original Pacific Jazz pressing)
Roy Haynes - We Three (minty original Prestige pressing)
Kenny Dorham - The Swingers (minty original Jazzland pressing)
Ahmad Jamal Quintet - Listen (minty original Argo pressing)
Ahmad Jamal - Naked City (minty original Argo pressing)
Ahmad Jamal - Poinciana (minty original Argo pressing)
Cannonball Adderley - Cannonball's Sharpshooters (minty original Mercury pressing)

Hopefully I'll get around to listening to them...soon.
