Title: PI Audio BlunderBUSS
Post by: HAL on April 11, 2016, 07:25:25 PM
Asked Dave to work on a special version of the UberBUSS system for my planar line array project.  He has named it the BlunderBUSS and will have 24 AC outlets to drive all the amp channels for the speaker design.

This should be interesting!  :D

Rich, you are FBBSC and I love that trait in my friends.  Over the years we have conspired and pushed each other to do not only more, but better.  It a pleasure to call you friend, crazy and my pal.  Too much fun!

This is how we all get better!

Let's rock this!!!

Dave,
My dad always said dream big.  I think this qualifies!

More fun being FBBSC than normal.

Might be time to turn on the wall of Laney's and Rock On!

Best,
Rich

If the speaker name gives you any idea, they are going to be called The Megaliths.   :D

Dave is working on the BlunderBUSS and waiting on some output plates to arrive.  Asked him to think about what to do for 20 - 2 meter power AC cords to go with the moded Gainclone style amps from the BlunderBUSS.

Have 16 Class AB amp modules built and tested.  Now to see what to do for getting them all running at the same time once the Blunderbuss arrives.

Triode Pete sent an AC power cable to test with the amp modules and BlunderBUSS.  If that works out, time for 20 power cables.

The test AC cable should be here next week to try.

Hal why not a buss bar connected to a TWL 7+ to wall for each speaker [R&L] and then hard wire all amps to buss bar.
A copper buss bar of course. Then a Blundrbuss would not be needed, just two Ubers and two Digibuss's. My 2 cents.

Charles,
I discussed it with Dave and the BlunderBUSS took shape.

Since I only need digital capability at the MS-3, the DigiBUSS and UberBUSS will be on that setup with the new one at the speakers for the amps.  They all have linear power supplies including the dspMusik.  If I need a few more outlets, will put the MicroBUSS on the UberBUSS as well.  Planned growth in case of adding new audio gear.

Dave wanted to beef up the unit for the 24 outlets.  It makes sense to me.

Will be adding my TT setup to the system, so the extra AC outlet capability at the other end of the room will be good.

Pete's TWL HAL1 AC power cable arrived today.

Will be trying it with the UberBUSS soon to get impressions.  Have a two channel moded ChipAmp setup to give it a listen.

Liked the first listen to the TWL AC cable.  Now to put some time on it and see the rest of the story.

Well the first batch of 8 TWL power cords is going on order to go with the first one I have.  This will be enough to get the first part of The Megaliths speakers running with the 16 amp channels.

Next batch of 8 TWL HAL-1 AC cables arrives next week.

Waiting on shipping confirmation on the BlunderBUSS.

Hope Dave's back is doing better.

The BlunderBUSS has arrived!  This is going to work out great powering The Megaliths speakers.

Twenty Class AB amp's and two Rythmik HX800 servo amps get connected with the TWL HAL AC power cables.

All the amp channels are tested.  Now to get things connected for trials.

The dspMusik RevD 8 channel digital crossover is here and will be connected to it as well.  Will be experimenting with the DigiBUSS with it or with the UberBUSS to power the MS-3 Music Server and data library.

Ribbon tweeter's and installation material have arrived as well, so off to getting it all installed and setup.

Did not weight it before putting it in the room.

DAMN!!! I lost track of this thread. 24 outlets!! I think that beast should be called THUNDERBuss. Some things though. With all those outlets shouldn't there be 2 IEC Inlets for all that power? That or should there be a 20 amp IEC inlet rather than 15 amp?

Average idle power for the 20 Class AB and 2 Class D servo amps are pretty low.  Peak power can be high, but doubt I will ever use that much in my room.

Was using my UberBUSS and extension strips with it, but now I needed more outlets for the full 22 amp channels which are now completed.

Last part that gets plugged in is the dspMusik digital crossover that is located near the speakers and goes into the Blunderbuss.

The UberBUSS and DigiBUSS now run the MS-3 Music Server PC and display.

To the right rear of the picture.
