It matters a lot, but there are damping versions with 1 degree slope and they don't sound good.

Yes I know of it, and was specifically steered away. My friend who recommended stainless steel said it sounds bad.

Ya, I don't pretend to know a cheap alternative. Although in the grand scheme the SS mat isn't really a crazy expenses - especially for the results.
