Title: Premier G2G at Carlman's
Post by: Carlman on June 01, 2009, 07:13:59 PM
The new basement is officially opening in June.  There have been sneak-peaks and previews.. but now, this is IT.. the Grand Opening!

This meeting is basically to introduce the space; explain what was done, then play music.  I'll have a Turntable, CD player, and audio PC.  I was thinking we could have 1 serious comparison, specifically DAC's.  If we have time, we can compare 2 phono pre's.

I can also play some live band DVD's and we can check out the projector and surround sound also.  We can even play video games.  I want it to be about fun and having a good time.. and to share ideas about building a room.

When: Saturday, June 27th 4:00 PM till 11:00 PM
Where: Carl's place, 1 mile south of Southpoint Mall in Durham.  (PM for address, phone)
What to bring: Music, drinks, snacks or desserts  (I'll furnish main course, and fresh popcorn)
Who: Anyone is welcome, please RSVP by the 23rd so I know how much to cook.  If you are a vegetarian, let me know.

Hope everyone can make it... Really looking forward to having a good time with you all!

-Carl

Hey we have room!  In fact, we have 2 rooms that stay ready for overnight guests at all times.  I'm about 15 minutes from RDU.  Come on down!  You'll be well cared for here! :)

Allen helped me build some acoustic panels this weekend and got a good taste of the final product.  Thank you again, Allen.  He helped me with the very first step of the project and now the very last.  Both jobs were hard work... and I couldn't have done it (right) without you.  This project has made me appreciate my friends more than ever before. :)

The panels aren't upholstered and we didn't get a chance to mount the ceiling panels.. but we got the raw elements finished and installed.  It's really sounding nice now.  I still have a little work to do.. including some bass traps in the corners.  No pics until I get the fabric on.. it's kind of ugly at the moment.. but the light switch fixes that. ;)

My wife and I sat and listened to music together for the first time in over a year last night.  Life is good. :)

either for this get together or for another time in the near future, I'm looking for additional input on some things I'm trying out at the moment.

I've got a normal audio PC with commercial level sound card SPDIF coming out of it.  Decent, but beaten by better CD transports playing the original disk.  I've got a professional USB DAC/mic pre/SPDIF converter that is better than the internal card in some ways, not quite as good in others.  It's cumbersome to work with and doesn't auto-recognize every time laptop is booted...

I've got a Lynx L22 card in a second audio PC that I'm having JPS modify the cable dongle/connectors on to be better quality.  It can feed AES/EBU over XLR terminated interconnect to the Oracle DAC1000.  It can also feed analog via balanced XLR to the analog inputs of the Oracle.

I've got a ART Legato USB-SPDIF converter coming (along with their SPDIF cable to listen and compare to JPS).  This will feed the coax digital input of Oracle DAC1000.

I'd like to compare these solutions to see if there is a clear winner.  I know we've talked about how to get the Sonos to be better quality.  I'd like to somehow get that in the mix as well.

The key here is that I'm too much of a lazy bugger to get up and change disks for every song I want to listen to.  With the exception of about 20 albums that I always want to hear at their very best, I'm willing to give up a smidge to a good transport to get the convenience of having 14 terrabytes of data at my fingertips.  The better half also likes the visual of no cases strewn all over the place and walls of bookshelves full of disks.

While I'm sorting out some speaker choices (more on that later) as well as finishing my rooms (garage just got bumped to top of honey-do list given her purchase on Saturday...which is truely AWFUL to drive, btw.  She won't have to worry about me disappearing with it anytime soon.  I'll just keep driving my truck, thank you very much), it might be better to use your dramatically improving room and setup if you are up for it, Carl?

I'm modding my stock Sonos with clock and linear PS, but I doubt it will be ready for G2G. For me the network server is the best solution for digital music playback, and Sonos is the best interface of all the servers. But soundwise (in stock form) it needs help for both digital and analog outputs. This is true of all toy music players.
Title: Re: Premier G2G at Carlman's
Post by: Carlman on June 09, 2009, 07:22:49 AM
I'd be interested in a PC/Transport comparison but probably best to do in a small gathering w/ 2-4 people.  That's a very technical type of comparison that requires a lot of configuration.  When Shane and Rich get their transports ready, you are both welcome to use my room as another reference to test/compare.

I'm finding that I definitely have corner issues as Bryan, Shane and Rich have all suggested..   I think everyone thinks I've left them off the list of treatments.. but I'm saving the best for last! haha..  I'm using 2x2 panels in temporary locations to hear how much the corners make a difference.. and the back corners seem like the worst... and they seem like they want a little diffusion and absorption.. and those corners are tight spots.. so, 2' x 7' across the corners is all I can do back there...

I'm thinkining of running traps between the ceiling and soffit areas too, all the way across the front and back of the room... probably get 4-6" of trapping there.  Seems like anything's possible with a nail gun. ;)

Looking forward to the meet, it sounds good enough right now.. and it keeps getting better. :)

Doing some chunk style absorbers in the corners will help a lot down low.  It's not surprising that it's the rear as that's where you have the sub driver.  The chunks can easily be made at 17x17x24" triangles to whatever height you want for a reasonable cost.

Since you already have other absorption up, you might want to consider a thin membrane over the corner traps to minimize upper mid and high frequency absorption.  I'd do those in the 4 corners prior to doing anything around the soffiting.

Carl, I have your USB condensor mic here, It's in the box of parts for next visit.
You can use that with your laptop and SynRTA (http://www.libinst.com/SynRTA.htm) to start seeing what's going on. Use the 1/48 octave setting from 10-300Hz to see the bass response in various places in the room. Position speakers for flattest bass response before putting in bass traps. Wall panels are mostly midrange, they can stay.

Also load Room EQ Wizard from hometheatershack.com. That's good for more precise snapshots, while SynRTA is good for live moving traps and speaker placement, you see feedback in real time.

Bryan's 5" blue cotton is superior value than FG for stuffing bass traps. Pallette wrap plastic is a good membrane for blocking absorbtion of ~3kHz? and higher. It is not as intense  upper midrange as kraft paper which sounds like it reflects down to 1.5kHz and adds the paper sound which is pleasant but can be overdone easily if you have a big area.

OK, I'm looking for a headcount.. I'm making 2 batches of BBQ; 1 a tomato-based sauce w/ beef, the other will be SC-style mustard based pork bbq.  I'll have sides and drinks also.
People often ask to bring something so some suggestions: soda's, deserts, your favorite beer, etc.  Donations are accepted, not required... honestly.

I'm getting pretty excited... another ceiling panel is up.... And today is bass-trap day.  I've been trying to figure out a way to do it neatly and today is the day to put some theories into practice.  I hope it works as nicely as it looks in my mind. ;)

I think I will wander down the street for a few minutes... :)

Tell me what cabling you need, if any....

I'm not far behind you... finally got the wood last night to finish making my panels (which means I need to stop by and pick up my chop saw from you)... I'm curious to see how you hung your ceiling panels.  I've got a pretty ingenious method I came up with that is super clean looking and easy to do.... even with 4X8X6 size...  I've also got a pretty simple method for bass traps if you want to discuss..

Looks like we'll have a pretty good showing, there are some folks I invited at the last meet I haven't heard from so if the locals can spread the word and let me know if anyone else is coming, that'd be great.  (Sol, Rick, Richard, etc.)
Mr. Wolf, I'll take care of ya.. We have a HT about a mile up the road.
Asking for a good bakery in NC is like asking for well, a good bakery in the south! hahaha  I'll see what we can do.
I have the Champagne!

There are a couple italian bakeries around.  My favorite NY bagel place (only decent bagel I've found in the area) up the street from where I used to be makes decent cannolis.  I'll talk to you tonight, Carl...

Do I need to bring cake again?

I'm half Italian believe it or not!  Sadly, most people here have no idea what would be in a white box tied with string. :(  However, I have found a place that has some!  But Shane's cannoli-connection may be better.. we'll talk... Worry not, it's all handled! 8)

BTW, someone asked me the theme of the meet and what was going to be compared, etc.

This meet is mainly a celebration of being finished with my 'dream room'.  I'm working on getting it dialed in enough to be the best sounding room and system I've ever heard.  I want to share that with everyone.

It will also be in a position to do a little comparing.. So, I figured for 1 hour out of the meet we'd compare differences with digital sources.  I've got a fancy Axis USB cable from Locus Design Group I can compare to the stock cord....  Rich is bringing his Altmann.. and I've got my Scott Nixon..

We may have some cables to hear/compare also.  We can compare vinyl to digital also.. I've got some similar records that I think are fun to compare.

After all of that, I'll be ready to have some drinks and let the tunes roll...

I would really like everyone who wants to, to get some time in the sweet spot and hear their favorite tunes.

Carl, hang on to the DNA-500 until the G2G - I'd love to hear it compared to your Mac.  Other than that and a few minutes in the sweet spot,  I'm ready to help you celebrate!

P.S... I was born and raised in the NJ/NY area but have been in NC since late '70s.  I've yet to find a bakery around here that comes close to those you find up north.  Then again, down here, if you're serving BBQ, most folks expect banana puddin' for dessert.  Not quite the same...  :(

I'd really like some salad with this meal, otherwise there won't be much green.. so, please still bring it...  How about enough for about 8 side-salads?

Ken, I think IPA's are right on the nose... some snacks might be good, nuts, fruit, etc.  Something that goes well with beer or Whisky late at night.. ;)

Mike, I've got your amp on now... It likes to be warmed up a while.  Seems to sound better now than it did in the first couple of hours I had it on.  Really detailed, great texture and full body... Good stuff.  It'll be fun to compare to the Mac so sure, that'll work...

Gear swap time will probably need to be a little more than an hour but we'll have plenty of time so should be fun.

Looks like I won't be able to make it.
Having some (non-audiophile) guests here Saturday from NY and the day is busily planned (yeah, I thought they were coming last week, but was not to be).

Tomorrow's the big day!! I just realized tonight at dinner we have a partay tomorrow!

I got a rare crick in my neck this morning, probably from swimming in the rough ocean on Weds. I hope it goes away by tomorrow. Else I will have to take up station in the sweet spot and not move one inch...

Charging up the altmann battery and chilling down the St Bridgetts Porter Ale.

My wife and boys are going to see Cirque de Symphony tomorrow evening. The trapezers will fly over the symphony while they play music. I just keep picturing somebody missing their grab and falling into the 2nd violin section....

See you tomorrow!

I smoked the BBQ all day today.. I am out of the mustard stuff so it's all tomato based.. all good meats from Whole foods.. all natural everything.  I'm hoping it'll save me some time in the kitchen tomorrow.

Carl,

First...thanks to you and Christine, for your wonderful hospitality!!!

Second...your 'man-cave' is just AWESOME . There is no room sound to describe...it is almost totally out of the equation. SO, now you can hear exactly what a given component is/isn't doing.

I will attempt to post pictures later...I'm trying to get over getting home and to bed at 3:00AM !

I want to thank Carl and his wife for a very special G2G last night.  I wish I had the words to best describe Carl's new Audio/Video Room - Ultimate Man Cave, Unbelievable Sound Room or maybe Ultimate Sound Room come to mind.  Guys, Carl and his wife have added a very special addition to their home!

I certainly had a great time socializing with everyone last night and yes actually spent maybe an hour in the sound room.  It was certainly an ear-opening experience of how a room impacts sound quality.  Any gear that goes into Carl's room better be quality stuff because it is not going to be able to "hide flaws" in this room.

While a very poor photographer I did take some shots last night and have posted them here:

Thanks again Carl for a great evening!

Carl, a simply amazing and eye-opening G2G last night!  Thank you for sharing your home and the results of your year of hard work on your basement.   Words and pictures cannot do justice to what it is like sitting in that room listening to tunes!  You have conclusively proven just what a difference a well designed room can have.  No amount of audio-components could accomplish what that room does.

Awesome Dude!

Carl--your hard work paid off  in spades and it was obvious to everyone last night who had the pleasure to sit in soft leather, gaze upon first class decor  and hear real music!

A beautiful room in every aspect and the first time I have ever heard a music system devoid of room interaction and that is no easy accomplishment. Your attention to detail was obvious as it was a well thought out and executed design.

It was an evening of great food great conversation and great music. Please pass the thanks on to Christine.
You and your wife are very gracious hosts.

Looks like everyone had a great time.  One of these days, I'll make it out to that part of the country.  Maybe after I hit the Powerball, I'll just spend a couple months traveling around to different folks' houses around the country.  That'd be a ball.

Anyway, congrats on your accomplishment Carl.  It's something you'll enjoy for a long time.

Super-Dee-Duper!!

Congrats Carl! You're well on your way to audio bliss.

Nice pictures, Ken, thanks!! It was awesome to see everybody again, especially lonewolf who I haven't seen since last Oct. Thanks for bringing the great tunes Chris, and for the CDs, which I left at Carl's by accident... I liked your new Rave test disk a lot.

The room does sound great. I like a tad bit livelier, but the midrange clarity was very satisfying and inspiring to start working on mine. Bass was excellent, for the first time I could heard the Fender bass string vibrating on Shane's Stevie Ray track. The McIntosh MC402 was the star of the gear show for me. Great synergy with the Piegas as always, and Bobby's Belles 21 tube preamp and Shane's Oracle DAC took your system to a very high level of musicality and clarity.  JPS SC3 interconnects did their part too, but no wire wire swapping madness this time....

Food was great. Lonewolf brought cannolis, and awesome shrimp, thanks Chris.. I haven't had shrimp that fresh and big in a long time. Christine made two fancy salsas. One was mildly spicy, the other was pineapple - cool! I think everyone agrees that the piece de resistance was stereofool's oatmeal cookies. Man that is your ticket to easy street. You could sell a million of those a day.  BBQ beef was delicious, and salad made me feel right at home, thanks Christine and Carl.

We played Sol's i60. It was mildly improved from last time, but twinges of same edgy flavor are still present. I talked to Sol this morning, he has a program of changes and experiments lined up for this week.  I said, man aren't you hungover? As usual Sol was one of the final stragglers.

Another highlight of the evening was when the screen lowered and Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood jammed in Carnegie Hall. I had the sub woofer right under my chair, so I had a unique perspective on the bass drum "sound." When i stood up though, it blended nicely as music. I'm still trying to decide which I like better. But I know that is the chair my wife will sit in when we come fo movie night... ;)

Special Congrats to Hantra, new daddy to Patrick, ~2 months now.  It was great to see him and meet Bobby whom I've heard so much about.

Fun party, and I mean PARTAY when the Parliament vinyl started spinning. Oh yeah...

Wow, what a great way to open a new sound room!  Thanks to everyone who brought food, good attitudes, compliments, suggestions, and so on.. I didn't get to hang out with everyone as much as I would've liked.. and I didn't get to do a few things I'd intended (more on that in a minute).. but it was a great party and I was so happy to see so many enjoying themselves.

Thanks to Ken and Steve for shooting photos.. Excellent shots! :)

One thing I'd meant to demonstrate was the difference a USB cable can make.. I have the Axis cable on the SN DAC.. and it was in use the entire night... But by the time we'd gotten to DAC-swapping I was exhausted and my mind was slipping a bit... So, I forgot to do the swap for the standard cable.  When we compared the Oracle to the SN most of the folks there seem to prefer the Oracle but I still like the organic, whole sound of the non-oversampling SN.  The SN would've sounded less resolving with the stock cord which would've further widened the gap... but I'll probably write up the differences on that in its own review because it takes the SN to a higher level... and it deserves the praise.

Special Thanks for the 'above and beyond' type help with this room:
Thanks to Rich for all the hands-on help (subs, panels, etc.), advice, analysis, and support throughout the room project.  I learned a lot thanks to you and I know I can test the patience of a teacher. ;)  You really did a lot for me on this project, thank you.
Thanks to Shane, for the help with panels, multiple loaner cables, dacs, and deals. :)
Thanks to Bryan Pape for good advice and good deals on the room acoustics, including design principles, and application advice.
Thanks to Chris, you came a long way!  It was greatly appreciated... as well as the nice nice cables you left us to try.
And thanks to my wife, Christine.  If it weren't for her financial skills, this room wouldn't have happened.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing others have a great time, enjoying themselves, getting inspired and learning from something I did.  That was the true joy to me of this meeting.  I think the room sounds great and I'm glad others thought so as well! :)

Looking forward to more meetings in the future.. whether I host or not.. It's just a nice group of folks to hang out with.

-Carl

Fantastic g2g in a first class venue!  Awesome food, AND surprise females?  It's all just too much!  Ohh, the sound was great too.   :duh

The room is amazing man.  I absolutely loved the extreme imaging, and the way subtleties weren't lost at all.  The freaking projector rocks too!  Thanks to you and the misses for the hospitality.  Very nice to finally meet the WOLF.

It was good seeing everyone, even though I'm an audio heathen at the moment, since I'm pushing 110 badass Denon receiver watts through my Piegas now.     I didn't catch too much hell for that, and I appreciate it.

Wish we could have stayed longer.  That's going to be the danger for you Carl with that room.  At least it keeps you off the streets, and Christine knows where to find you.

Looking forward to next time already!

Many thanks to Carl for hosting.... I have a funny feeling that we'll spend a few more evenings down in the basement of his house comparing gear...  I have the perk of living up the street so I can harrass him to try out stuff and compare it directly with my own evolving rooms.  His room, in its current state, shows up even the most minute of differences between things.  Last night when I stopped by to pick up all my wires and gear that I just left there on Saturday, it took all of 10 minutes to compare 3 power cords on the Belles preamp and hear a dramatic difference between all three.

It was great to see everyone and catch up, if only for a few minutes.  Also, it was great to finally officially meet you Chris, even though we've passed each other multiple times in the halls at RMAF.  Thanks for the tunes.

Sol,  I don't know if you read this forum.  But I'm looking forward to the 30 watter becoming a more powerful unit.  I give you oodles and oodles of credit for sticking with the transisters in the 60 watter as long as you have and trying to make them sing with numerous circuit changes.  I really liked that 30 watter at the last meet and am curious as to how it will sound with more devices paralleled and a beefier power supply and driver to run them.

branché    8)     I have some unused (XL) BSA T-shirts to give away, but they eluded me moments before departure. Next time...

Inspiring is right! I went to Depot today and bought wood and supplies to build the retractable sound proofing walls. I want that sound in MY house!!!

That's a great test track. His voice is kind of grainy and it's easy to hear variations of grain in different setups. Plus there's a lot of processing that's applied, removed, and/or changed during the song.. fun to listen and hear in different systems.  The swirly-surround effects were pretty big in my last house, in a small room about the size of yours.. It could be that your speakers aren't perfectly centered/toed.  That was the issue for me anyway.
(BTW, this is the Peter Gabriel album 'Up', 2nd track, 'Growing Up'.. which has become a test favorite for me.)

Next time I'm in NY we'll do some tweaking if you'd like.

Thanks for all the compliments!

-Carl

PS I did the same test with Shane on the Power Cords that I did with you.. Very interesting to hear that a power cord on a preamp can change things like it does.  Just blows my mind.

Yes....how the sound travels up the sides of the room in that tune...and past the listener....
....who is seated in the 2nd. row....middle seat.

I thought you had the side/rear speakers on...it was spooky....but very good !!!

A good room..... 8)

What is this "Gabriel Test" a cd track? Which? What does one listen for... or something else, more insidious, requiring consenting adults?

TIA,

I swung by Carl's last night with my 16 yr old daughter to pick up the RS Jaco.   While we were there Carl treated us to that Gabriel track along with a few others.   That's about all it  took to blow her away.  Friends, I think we have another audio-addict in the making.   Carl then gave us a bit of the movie Casino Royale.   That definitely put her over the edge.  When we got in the car, she said "Dad, I don't know have a clue how to explain to people just how cool that room is!".

When old farts (any you know who you are ;-) can blow away a 16 year old girl, you know you must be doing something right!

That's right.  Expose them young to proper AV.  We need to get these kids off the MP3 bandwagon.
