MY PREAMP ADVENTURE
« on: February 20, 2011, 12:11:54 PM »
I was loaned a few preamps this weekend in my quest to replace my Odyssey Candela. I tried replacing caps in the Candela noted in another thread but it just wasn't the spice I needed.I will log my findings in this new thread.

The preamps are :

1. Modwright 9.0 -no upgrades- Thanks Chris for the 3
2. Juicy Music Blueberry
3. Philly Audio
4. Audio Alchemy Signal Line Controller-thanks Barry
5. Modwright 9.0 w/ Tube Rectifier Upgrade-will arrive tuesday
6. Niteshade Beacon 2-shipping this week-Thanks Blair

I always wanted to hear the Juicy Music preamps and i almost bought a new one from Mark Deneen but he shut down the business rather suddenly. i wish you could find a SAS 10A to audition because it is really a great preamplifier

Listened to each yesterday for a few minutes and wasn't that crazy about the Juicy Music. It was a little lifeless.

Need someone to drive up and tell you what you like?

And good luck with the move, I hate it.

I spent the past few days listening to the Modwright and felt the bass is very loose. Overall it has a very solid state sound. I Have a tube rectified version coming Wed so I'm hoping this will be better than the original version .Not what I expected.Very fatiguing sound. I wanted to like it , after all it is a Modwright.

I hooked up the the Philly Audio pre and immediately notice a huge difference. Great tone ,bass , warm mids ,great highs and very musical and sweet sounding. This surely beats the MW.Too bad they are no longer made. More on the Philly Audio later...
