TAS Recommended Floorstanders over $20,000

As predicted, these are all perennial favorites. I was surprised to see how many of them I have actually heard.

I'd probably go with the Wilson Alexandria.

I always find "over $20,000" anything interesting. Without hearing all the speakers listed and if I had to choose one blind, I would go with the Nola Baby Grand Reference speakers as I like the design (although not sure where $55,000 comes from).

I have a pair of Nola Baby Grand "like" speakers and find the open baffle midrange in the right room to be truly amazing providing more of a lifelike presentation.

I have never been a Wilson Audio fan as the are too sterile for my taste.

I have not heard the new Vandy 7's as I could not make time at RMAF to get over there.

Not on this list but another > $20K speaker I really like is the larger (even smaller) TAD speakers.

It's funny, with all the shows I have been to I have never really been blown away by anything in this price range. It seems I always come away thinking well OK, they were good, but for that good considering the price. I am sure it is a combination of the law of diminishing returns and  the less than ideal conditions of a show environment, but I can never remember coming out of a mega-buck speaker demo saying wow, if I hit the lottery this week the first thing I buy will be a pair of those speakers.

The only mega-buck speakers at this year's RMAF that really impressed me were the larger TAD speakers. Real nice but at $70K :duh

Ouch. I guess my point is there are a lot of really nice speakers that can be had for $10-15K and then an lot of other things that can be done with that remaining $55-60K. I just don't know that putting $70K towords speakers would give you a good bang for the buck. But then again what item at that end of the price range does. A Bently is a real nice car, but is it worth the price of 5 Lexuses (or would that be Lexi?)

I want the Grand Vena from 3A. It's only about 8000$, which is a reasonable and modest price to pay for a great speaker. More I am not willing to pay.

The only speaker in that bunch I've heard outside of a show are the Hansen's, and they were pretty awesome.  MBL's are always a dream speaker, but they never quite work right without MBL amps driving them, and that adds the GDP of another small country to the bill. Some of the lesser priced Focal's might also be worth checkinig out, and I really want to hear a pair of Tidal's.

But in a nutshell I agree with Tom. What do you really get in these speakers that you don't get from something (still expensively) priced at $15000? I think my wife would kill me if I told her I want a pair of $15000 speakers, let alone $40000.

Mostly prestige.  How many people do you think spend $70K on speakers, as much or more on cables & electronics and then turn it all over to the decorator to place in the room so it looks good.  :wtf:

It never ceases to amaze me how many ads there are on A'gon for big buck speakers where the pictures of the system show the speakers place in the room right up against the back wall, the side wall or both. These speakers couldn't possibly be sounding anywhere near as good they are capable of sounding like.  :duh

I guess there are a lot of people out there with more money than brains.

For $70k, I'd build a better room to listen in, a small BMW, and then look for some good $20k speakers.
