Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Gershwin Songbook - Vol. 1

Verve LP

Verve Mono Deep Groove pressing

Jerome -

Does the deep groove have any significance for a Verve album or is that just a Blue Note thing?

Tom, as far as I am concerned Deep Groove is only of significance to collectors.  Blue Note wasn't the only record label to have records pressed at plants that used machines that would put a groove in the label area.  Verve and Contemporary did it as well.

My main interest in first pressings is that given a choice, I think it is preferable to have records that were made from fresh master tapes to masters that are 50 years or more old.  I will admit that this preference of mine is based more on psychology than empirical fact.  I know that old tapes can sound fantastic if they are not worn.  A few years ago when I still had a reel to reel deck I managed to acquire some still sealed Columbia 4-track stereo tapes made in the 1960s of a number of Bruno Walter/Columbia Symphony recordings and their sound was some of the best I have ever heard...on any media.

You may find this archived thread on the Steve Hoffman forum an interesting read.

Pure Pleasure Records 180g vinyl reissue.  This is the inaugural version of the Jazz Messengers, with Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Doug Watkins, and Donald Byrd.  Originally issued by Columbia in 1956, I have been waiting a long time for a high quality reissue.  Pure Pleasure Records can do no wrong in my book.  This is the way to do a quality vinyl reissue.  You get two 180g LPs pressed at Pallas Records in Germany, in a beautiful high gloss gatefold jacket.  On the first LP you get the original album that was issued in 1956.  On the second LP you get a number of bonus tracks that were previously unreleased.  It's a fantastic package that sounds superb and is worth every bit of the $49.95 price.  Highly recommended.

This is an awesome album by my favorite prodigy of Bud Powell, contains a song dedicated to my other fav Powellist, Walter Davis, Jr.  Sound quality is fantastic, with beautiful rich detailed acoustic bass of George Mraz, and relaxed but hip vibe of Harris. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios 1996.
