You got it right about DIY, it can be a real adventure when taken to the extremes. Sometimes you win and sometimes not, but it's always a fun pursuit.  Looking forward to seeing (and hearing) your 26 pre Mike.

Rich,
There will soon be 3 more of these pre's running around. It all in the works.

The other 26 you referred to will be converted to a LCR phono stage.

Hold on...its goin to be a bumby ride!

Mike
System consists of an amp a preamp, 2 speakers a turntable and a phono preamp, Also some cables and power cords and a really cheap cd player.

Mike,
Does your 26 triode exhibit microphonics in your preamp? I know my 71A (171A, 371A, etc.) single triode linestage exhibited some microphony & I had to hand select the triodes to tame the microphony. NOS, very old (late 1920's) globe (balloon) RCA-Cunningham 171A's worked the best...and oh, what sound...

The 26 triodes look like the 71A triodes!

Cheers,
Pete

yes it is microphonic, switching the volume controls up and down sends the clicking of the stepped attenuators right thru the system, but it ain't no big deal really.
The sound is worth it, and yes you do have to find the right tubes.
karl has a way to test for microphonics and to match accuratley that uses a computer, he says the Hickocks are a joke for real testing of tubes. They just do the basics, when dealing with DHT tubes a bit more is needed. And yes his Cunningham 26's sound great as well.

Fortunatley these tubes are pretty cheap at 5 and 10 bucks a pop. Buy a bunch and test them to get a matched pair. In the world of $300+ Tungsol roundplates, buying a bunch seems a bargain :thumb:

Mike,
That is cool... My 71A Triode preamp does the same "clicky" thing with my stepped attenuator... I also have Herbies tube dampers on them.. that helps a bit too... Hickok tube testers are great for determining the micromho conductivity, gas, useful life, etc. of tubes but testing for microphony is another story... My Hickok tester has a tube tapper (looks like a pencil-sized rubber mallet) to check for "shorts" but not really for microphonics when "tapping" the tube!

I love that the 26 DHT's are reasonable!!! You know how I feel on overpriced Hi-Fi stuff!!! BTW, you need to get some good power cables on your preamp! Some vintage stuff to match your vintage triodes! I need some good recommendations on IC's! Hopefully talk or better yet see you soon!  :thumb:

IC's are being beta tested as we speak.
I want to release a great product at a great price. Looking for mega buck performance at under $200 a meter, depending on RCA connector.
Will let you know how that pans out.

Sorry I'm late to the party. Didn't know the mini- rave would get posted. I want to thank everybody for coming. I had a good time with friends.
Thanks Richidoo for the compliment. The Salks like a lot of power and the Spectron dishes it out with ease.
Carl modded my pre-amp so it is a work in progress. Bass and treble improved but the midrange took a step backwards. Next morning played around with with power cords and tubes also, took out the bybees I had on the speaker terminals. Midrange sounds much better, but would like to see what the oil choke brings to the table.
To be continued!
