I don't even want to think about what the tracking weight was (I'm sure it was n excess of even the  4.5g you are using. And whenever you have trouble tracking a record (usually due to scratches) the common fix was to balance a quarter on top of the headshell (and carve your initials into the vinyl  :duh)

Now that you mention it I remember that too, and we would start with a dime, then a penny, nickle, and finally a quarter.  Thank god we never needed to use a half-dollar.

Ah, the good old days. I bet  that's what happened to those opera sets you posted about yesterday.  #-o

Nahh.  I think a brick was put on the headshell and not a quarter.  :(

You know, this discussion just brought back a memory from when I was about 12. The arm on that record player (I can't even call it a turntable) had a flat plastic piece in front of the cartridge. T think it was part of the mounting system. Anyway, with the arm sitting unaltered this plastic piece hovered over the record. But when you started to ad coins the extra weight would flex the cantilever such that the plastic piece would ride on the record. I remember being concerned that this could damage the LP so I took a small piece of felt and glued it onto that plastic piece so if it touched the record at least it would be a soft surface.

Holy cow, I was tweaking equipment back in Jr. HS and I didn't even know it.

Do you think that maybe there is a tweaking gene embedded into the DNA of all audiophiles?

Mabye.  But I am fairly certain that there's a gene in audiophiles that makes the money fly out of our wallets for records, CD, gear, and other audio related nick-nacks.

I was just chatting with Bill on the phone and buying a few records on eBay...and next thing you know I spent over $100 and I thought to myself, "What just happened?"

That wont do it brother, I met Bill at Record Connection, was only going to buy '1 or 2', and walked out over $200 poorer, I think he sends out a subliminal measure that encourages others to buy stuff.

It's all Bill's fault.  :duh

If I were to send subliminal messages Gene Boy it would be to buy LP's and then ship directly to me, do not pass go do not collect $200  aa

I took #2 son to some record stores for a little hunting and gathering last Saturday and he scored a Mercury Living Presence Stereo LP out of the dollar bin.   8)

He has several Mercury LPs in his collection that either I had doubles of or found for him, but this was the first time he found one on his own (let alone in the dollar bin, in really nice shape and of a piece of music that he was familiar with.) Needless to say, he was a happy camper.  :D

When we got home, all my wife had to say was "You finally got him to drink the KoolAid......"
