Dodd's 6H30 battery pre does sound nice.  It can be powered with a traditional 12v regulated power supply but I don't believe Gary approves of this.

Update 11/13/12

I just spoke to George Kaye regarding the specs on my amp that all of you have been kind enough to tell me I need to know for a proper matching of pre-amps to go with it.

The Moscode 600 amp specs:
- Input Impedance: 274K
- Input Signal Voltage for full output: 1.55 Volts

It is rated at 300 watts into 8 ohms.

Hopefully, these specs will help me eliminate whatever pre's don't match up "spec-wise" to my Moscode amp and I can narrow my focus towards whichever pre-amps do.  Please let me know if you are aware of any previously mentioned recommendations of pre's here that "disqualify themselves" against these amp specs.

Thanks to all for your help! :thumb:

Basically it means that anything with a pulse will work.

To minimize preamp noise floor and to maintain useful volume control range, try to keep the preamp voltage gain down. If your sources have the typical 2V output, then your total voltage gain of preamp + amplifier should be around 40dB. Most power amplifiers have voltage gain of 26dB, but it can be higher, rarely is it lower. A preamp with 10dB gain works well for most modern systems. Normal listening volume level should be about 50-60% throttle.

Yeh, I'm OK guys.  Thanks for the concern.  Just emerging from survival mode, and starting to get some modern conveniences back.

Sandy decimated Long Beach's infrastructure and destroyed much property.  Very few were left untouched by the flooding.

This sad, powerful and emotionally stirring video documents the terrible destruction of my beautiful beach community:

Hurricane Sandy hits Long Beach, NY

To all those likewise effected, I wish you a speedy recovery.

I had the Beacon for an in-house demo for a week and loved it. Would have bought it if Bill hadn't made me a great deal on a pre-production unit of the Purity One pre.

Do not forget Nightshade Audio. The Beacon is all that one needs. Dynamic with oddles of presence. Blair can match it to your Amp. Well under your budget and IMO real bng for the Buck. Starts at $900. Pm him at AC and find out what is available. Tell him I sent you.
Next up is Gary Dodd Audio. The preamp at RMAF was stunning in sonics. Battery powered, so no need for cords and conditioner.
BTW did you rule out the Sonic Frontiers you heard ?

Dateline, November 18, 2013....

I've made a decision. (Considering that I'm the one saying that, the statement alone is news-worthy!)  I have to admit that even I am shocked at what I plan on doing pre-amp wise.  After 25+ years of being a very happy Naim owner, I am moving on.

All I can say right now is it's the latest model of this Pre, not even listed on their website yet!  More info. to follow, once I close the deal and know the details better.

Of course, I couldn't react to everyone's advise and buy 16 different pre-amps, but I did pick one of the one's mentioned.

Thanks for everyone's help on this topic. :thumb:

Making a decision is the hard part. Besides paying for it, of course... congrats Bill!

Tis better to be a tease, than an "askhole" !!!

I couldn't act upon everybody's suggestions, but I did take one!  I will follow up with more, once I know all of the details myself!  So much for continued auditions in my system before buying!  Sometimes you just gotta act.  Especially me who procrastinates on everything!

OK, boys and girls... "I let the cat out of the bag" tonight at our Audio Syndrome meeting and told everyone that I've decided on the Dodd battery powered (VGP) variable gain pre-amp.

It's not the exact same design as what's listed on the Dodd Audio site (I asked for one less input and a few other things that are different) but the link below will give everyone an idea of what Gary Dodd offers.

http://www.doddaudio.com/Preamp.php

Hopefully, this will be a good match up to my NYAL Moscode 600 amp once I get it back...???

Wish me luck, while I pray to the God of Synergy!

G'nite all.

Congradulations!
Let us know how it sounds . looks like a nice design
I would love to try his Phono pre with Slagle stepups.
I like the idea of batteries, one less power cord to screw things up :thumb:

Wait until you start rolling caps!   then the fun begins :duh
but is very easy to solder in caps takes 2 minutes, and really does make a difference, but they get expensive fast

enjoy

Mike
System consists of an amp a preamp, 2 speakers a turntable and a phono preamp, Also some cables and power cords and a really cheap cd player.
