Michael Legrand: Summer of '42

I picked this up because I have several other nice albums by Michael Legrand. If you see this record in the store run, do not walk, away from there as fast as you can!

The strings on this album sound like fingernails on a blackboard. Hey, not every 69 cent Crack House LP can be a winner.  :(

Keith Lockhart/Utah Symphony: Symphonic Daces

Mr Lockhart was a guest conductor of the NC Symphony 3 years ago, when Kyoko Takezawa performed Bartok Violin Concerto 2, which blew me away. He is extremely talented.

I was very happy when Keith Lockhart took over the reigns of the Boston Pops from John Williams. While Williams is very talented as a film composer I always felt the performances he led were a bit to much on the mechanical side. Well done technically, but lacking in emotion (kind of like a movie soundtrack?   #-o)

Since coming to Boston Keith has, IMO,  put the sense of fun back into the Pops.

Elton John's Greatest Hits

Elton's music is what it is, but the sound quality on this LP is fair at best. "Greatest Hits" albums are notorious for having sub-par sound because of the use of multiple generation tape (most greatest hits albums are at least second generation as the songs from the various albums are copied onto a single reel of tape for mastering purposes, and that assumes that they are starting with the original master tapes from the albums in the first place, many time they start with sub-masters. And given how popular this album was who knows how far down the stamper food chain this particular LP was.

That said I thought the sound quality of "Rocket Man" was much better on the CD layer of "Honky Chateau" SACD Hybrid.

OMG!    That is the second time this summer that I made a statement about liking a CD pressing over a vinyl copy.  :wtf:

Sometimes I scare myself.

Linda Ronstadt: For Country Lovers

A collection of Linda Ronstadt recording that lean more towards the Nashville side of things. I tend to like more of her Rock type recordings, but the wife likes Country music. So this is my contribution to world peace.  (My world anyhow. ;) )

Like Jeff Foxworthy says "When Momma ain't happy, Ain't nobody happy."  [-(

The Alternate Blues

Had a 'play date" with BobM this afternoon and he turned me on to this CD. An all-star cast of musicians in an improv jam session. Features 4 takes of the same song that somehow all com out different. Give you some nice insight into the creative process of making jazz.  8)
This one is on my short list.

Thanks Bob!  :thumb:

I have an LP with the exact same band. Mine is called Trumpet Summit meets Oscar Peterson Big Four.  Nice vibe. Mine is released on Pablo Records in 1980, yours is released 1982. But I wouldn't be surprised if they are recorded the same date. I don't think Freddie would not do that gig twice.

I'll have to dig that one one tomorrow. It's been so long since I heard it.

That's what I love about this thread. It puts ideas into your head. Whether it's something new to look for or something you already have that you need to pull off the back wall. It gets some good music onto your system. Because in spite of all the time we put into perfecting our hardware in the end it's still all about the music......  8)

Barney Kessel with Shelly Manne and Ray Brown: The Poll Winners

Solid acoustic Jazz. Good sound, although my LP has a bit more surface noise than I would like to put up with.
