Title: HELP! Anyone VERY Familiar With Apple Id Issues
Post by: James Edward on June 24, 2020, 07:07:46 AM
My wife and I have been sharing an appleid for years. She recently signed up for Apple cloud space/backup, with somewhat disastrous results. My ipad(using the shared id), now displays her text messages, my ipad 'rings' when her phone is nearby, and my itunes library (on a windows PC) is and was under her appleid authorization. My IPOD is also tied to the id.

I ask if anyone is VERY familiar with these id's and how Apple treats them, because it is not simply a matter of me getting my own id. I believe I have tied myself into an electronic Gordian Knot.

I'd like to get my own id, and somehow transfer 'ownership' of the devices ( my ipad, ipod, and itunes library) onto that id.

Thanks for any thoughts...

We had to go to an Apple Store to get it straightened out.

I think your Gordian knot can be untied. I’ve had a similar issue with Apple IDs. Call Apple, explain the situation and they will help you resolve it.

I've got a <somewhat> similar situation in that I've been using my father's old iMac since he died 3+ years ago, but never had his Apple ID removed and changed over to mine. I was concerned important genealogical data might disappear, and I wanted to monitor his old email address should anyone attempt to contact him.

I'm ready to make the switch now.

You don’t really need to go to an Apple store. They can do a screen share. That’s how I’ve gotten the help. My closest store is over 2 hours away. Not sure if all their stores are even open or if you’d need an appt.
Anyway, glad I’ve got Apple. They’re great to deal with  :thumb:

Apple might be decent for knowing how their stuff works, but NEVER EVER send anything to them for a repair.

So... I created my own Apple ID, wiped/reset the two iPads I have, and started fresh. I spoke with apple, and the only way to download/sync my new iPads with my iTunes library, was to do something they call ‘family share’. Since all of the music I purchased via the iTunes Store was bought with the ID I shared with my wife, this was the only way. Music from my imported cd’s of my own collection would not be a problem.
I’m not thrilled; I would have liked a complete separation of the id’s, but this was the best workaround. Whatever.
I am fully aware that this post may make no sense, nor appeal to anyone, but I felt I should at least close this out.
As for what has been said regarding Apple support, I agree. I was in a chat session for about 40 minutes, and my problem was resolved as best it could, with minimal trouble.

I understand what you’re saying as I’ve also requested help with the ID issue. Sometimes the resolution isn’t what I’d like, but I’m usually quite happy with their effort trying to resolve the problem.
It gets even more complicated with photos...
