Speaker Spikes
« on: October 02, 2014, 01:41:09 PM »

Anyone know a good source for decent and affordable speaker spikes.   I want to replace the spikes on my Zu with something similar to Herbie's Threaded Stud Gliders or something that does not look like a nail straight into the carpet.

Thx

Hey Deepak, with carpeting your best bet is probably spikes.
It will be more planted to the ground that way.
How do you like the new speakers ?

Hi Deepak,
Joe is right. With carpet, you want something that will penetrate through to the floor for a secure coupling. Anything less and I think it will have an adverse affect.

I was just going to say the same thing. Especially of you are still set up in the basement and the spikes can rest on the cement floor.

The question is is coupling [ spikes ] or decoupling [ Herbie's ] the answer. This has been debated and the conclusion try both. some likey coupling some no likey.
For me decoupling has been the most affective.

Right now I am in the process of moving my speakers around and setting them back up in one of the spare bedroom.  What I plan to do while setting them up is to use 3/8-16 carriage bolts.  Set them up properly mark the setup with blue tape and put the regular spikes back on.

My GTA2s sounded much clearer when I removed the spikes going through the carpet into concrete, with borrowed Sort Fut feet from Nordost. After I returned them I went with Herbies on top of the carpet, easy to move and nearly as good as the Nordost feet. For my planar panels, in my room & carpet, decoupling worked best.

For me as well the decoulping thing was most affective. Same for equipment racks.
I was a non-believer of decoulping until I tried it. Herbies carpet gliders oh my !!
