Now it's Keith Emerson. A true pioneer and one of the benchmarks of prog. Rumors say it was a suicide. Gunshot to the head due to depression caused by a degenerative nerve disorder that was affecting his hands.

Pop/Rock superstar Prince Rogers Nelson dead at 57. He was hospitalized after an emergency landing of his jet in IL a few days ago, they say it was flu like symptoms he had been fighting flu for a few weeks. He played a gig the next day. Today emergency call to his home. Time will tell the cause. Lots of cancelled gigs last month due to illness.
I just started dating my wife when Little Red Corvette came out, summer 1983. She gave me a LP copy of his second album Paisley something or other, still have it.
Edit: Rogers, not Roger
Edit: TMZ: "Not flu.... "
Edit: TMZ: "...opiate overdose..."

This year is hard on drummers... Now it is Neil Peart. Lot a 3-1/2 year battle with glioblastoma.
-
Yup brain cancer. Take off the headphones. We still have his music. RIP Drummer Man.
charles
-
Peart's passing came as a shock, as I was wondering what he was up to lately. He supposedly quit drumming and Rush entirely since he could not play at the technical level he wanted to due to arthritis.

Bob Shane, founding member and last of the Kingston Trio has passed away. Loved their music, always put a smile on
my face. Will be sorely missed.

I am lucky to own several of their LPs. Will plat them tonight to honor him.

Lyle Mays, keyboardist for decades with the Pat Metheny group has died after battling a long standing illness.
I don't know that he ever got the credit he deserved for his role in all those spectacular compositions and recordings. He did play with other people occasionally but most of his work was with Metheny. He was a unique voice in that group and a fabulous orchestrator. He was 66.

Met him when we did sound for the Pat Metheny Group at Paolo Soleri amphitheater in Santa Fe back in the early '80s. They were all (Metheny, Lyle, Danny Gotllieb and Steve Rodby) kind and appreciative plus they killed it that night!

Sorry to see that Ells Marsalis and Bill Withers have both passed away :(

Bill Withers died today.........sorry. I just noticed it was already posted.... :(

Doesn’t matter that they were both in their mid 90’s. Dead is dead and they will be missed by those of us that valued their contribution, but also by friends and family.
Sad... they are gone, but not forgotten. :(

It is with sadness that Marty DeWulf, owner/editor of Bound for Sound has passed away.
I had the opportunity to visit him and Laura several times and enjoyed listening to his system and discussing audio. Even if one differed in subjective sonic opinion, his opinions were honest.
He was a gentleman.
One of the reasons I chose Bound for Sound to review my products was his very high ethics and moral
standards. With such standards, Bound for Sound never accepted any advertising.
In reviews, he explained both the strengths and weaknesses of a component. He never sounded phony to me.
One of his famous articles was titled "Truth be Told", pertaining to the rampant corruption in the audio
field. His example was a beacon.
He will be sorely missed, one of a few men of high integrity in the audio realm.

While Marty will be missed I have to disagree with you that he was "one of a few men of high integrity in the audio realm."
I have been involved in this hobby for over thirty years and it has been my great pleasure to deal with many people whom I would definitely consider to be of high integrity. The nature of the audio press end of the business is such that it is totally dependent on advertising dollars and as a result there are times where financial considerations tend to take precedent over what I might call total journalistic freedom. And it is not just the audio press. I have a college friend who has spent his career in the newspaper business. He tells me that when he started there in the 80s the newspaper business was a noble profession and bringing the truth to the public was their first and foremost goal. But as the newspapers began getting bought up by big corporate conglomerates whose only concern was how next quarters financials were going to look, the news just became another way to generate revenue for the corporation and profits started to become more and more important than the journalism itself.
Sorry for rambling on, but the point I am trying to get to is that most of the people I have dealt with on the manufacturing side of this business are hard working honest people who do their best to try to put out the best product possible withing the market segment they are trying to address. I would just hate to see them lumped in with the audio press when talking about the integrity of the people in the the business. People like you and Dave and Pete are out there trying to do what you can to help us enjoy our music more. I don't and certainly don't think anybody else should look at guys like you in same light that we do the audio press. (and of course I and talking about the audio press as an industry in general, there are certainly some people involved in the press (like Marty) who are stand up guys.)

Since Marty is involved in the press, I was referring mainly to them T, but I can name some big names if you wish. I also know a few manufacturers as well. Being a manufacturer might allow me to see things behind the scenes, by personal experience, so how would the public know?
I also know of a few in forums (not AN) who have expressed to me they don't care about shilling, one just recently. These are not hearsay, but direct, personal contacts.
I was directly blackballed by some industry and virus attacked simply because I defended my amps using indirectly heated tubes in my SET amps some 20 years ago. I had never heard of the forum before that.
I then received at many as 36 virus attacks in One Day, not over weeks, for simply showing that the plate curves in triode mode were the same as "true triodes".
I soon learned I better have an external hard drive backup since I had to restore my computer dozens, if not more times over the months. I simply stopped posting on that forum.
I had one preamplifier destroyed with a hammer because I would not sell my preamplifier to a well known reviewer for $300.00. Of course no one hear about these unless I mentioned it.
I also had one reviewer from a large forum go after me for ~2 years while he was pushing brand "A".
I did not personally know either the reviewer nor the company. Turned out he reviewed "A" and the company's owner had been caught pay for review. By the way, UPS mistakenly shipped back the preamplifier to the shilling reviewer. I did finally receive a check for $300.00 from the famous review magazine.
You either do the bribes or no review.
With the varied so called "scientific" and otherwise postings, how does one know what is true and what is not, who is honest and who is not?

Steve, I feel you...
There are people in the "industry" (I use the term loosely) that revel in the power that the wield in their own little corners of the world and use their position to inflate their egos and in some cases build their systems. I've known a few people like this on forums, too. I had an similar instance like you with my computer being essentially destroyed by someone that I pissed off by telling the truth about what I saw as one-sided injustice. It was my fault they got in becausde I was using a free "firewall" that was more of a fire sale and provided very little protection. It was OK because it led me to become a Mac user for more than just a music server. :thumb:
I've had "reviewers" (again: loosely) that requested gear to review and then never wrote a word, but kept the gear. A couple of fairly well known names in the audio world. They suck!
I enjoyed Bound for Sound over the years, as I have PFO and Part Time Audiophile among others. It just pains me to know that we lose the good guys and the jerks are still out there.
Marty will be missed greatly. 😔

I've mentioned many times over the years that I am not surprised and disgusted by the base nature of humans, but I have been wrong. I am still taken aback by the conscious, deliberate meanness manifested by so many. The few examples that I just read above surprised anew.
Don't get me wrong, I am sure that I hurt or offend quite often in my dealings with others, but it is always an unconscious act. It is an inevitability with human interaction I guess. What one says/does and what another understands/feels can be diametrically opposed.

I just heard about the passing of bluegrass great Eric Weissberg, best known for playing the banjo parts on Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks and the mega-hit Dueling Banjos. He passed late last month not of Covid, but rather from complications from his 5 year battle with dementia. The cause is not really important, it is just sad to loose yet another great musician.
Eric was not just a skilled banjo player, but a great entertainer as well.
Here is a clip of him performing Dueling Banjos with Tom Paxton in 2009:

And one of my favorites also died today, Ennio Morrecone. The list of his film scores is too long to post, and probably close to a dozen are great scores. First among many I consider great oboe solo from "The Mission".

Yep. It is sad that the guitarists of the original Fleetwood Mac were plagued with issues: Green - a schizophrenic ; Danny Kirwan - an alcoholic ; Jeremy Spencer - a religious cultist. So much talent that went to hell in a handbag. Pity...

Rocco Prestia, the genius that anchored the bottom of the groove for Tower of Power, has passed. Along with Dave Garibaldi, they defined power funk for years.
ToP has always been on my playlist rotation. If you can’t move with that groove you must be dead.
RIP, Rocco.

Eddie Van Halen - RIP! Thanks for the great music over the years and you great sense of humor.

My Dad died 2 days ago, October 5, 2020. He was 82 years old. He was plagued by late stage Alzheimer's.
I was at his bedside and visited him every day during his last days.
I read the Word of God to him by his bedside, conveying to him the power of Jesus Christ, and that because my Dad prayed the sinners prayer asking Jesus to save him that my former pastor guided him through years ago, I reminded him that God cannot lie and will keep his promise, and he will be free of all disease, pain, and suffering forever, and will one day be given a new body, incorruptible. Amen.
Dad, I miss you and will until the day I die.

Mark,
I am very sad at this news. I knew about you caring for him, moving to where he lived. Knowing the depth of your Faith I am heartened to see that you were able to minister to him in so many ways. I'm sure your words and prayers were a comfort to him and your reassurance of God's Faithfulness is exactly what he needed to hear and know.
Our prayers are with you and yours in this difficult time. Time will bring comfort. O lost my Dad in 1990 and 30 years have flown by. I think of The Oldster every day and when I do I smile because of who and what he was to me. I love him now more than ever. Peace will come, Brother.

So my guitar luthier and bassist friend Ian Bannerman was at NAMM and in the cafeteria. Sitting at the next table were Tony Levin and Lee Sklar talking over lunch... just sharing stories about Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins gigs they had played.
Michael Anthony walks in with two goons (body guards?) and he motions at the table Tony and Lee are sitting at. They walk over and tell Tony and Lee "you guys are sitting at Michael's table." Tony and Lee look at each other, shake their heads, laugh and ask Ian if they can sit with him. The three had a great talk.
Talking about Anthony in the same conversation with Tony Levin and Lee Sklar is laughable at best. My opinion. 8)

OMG. What an overinflated sense of...Was this a recent NAMM or back when VH were "big"? D-bags, every single Van Halen member from what I've read and heard!!!

Crap.
Back in the late 70s (or early 80s) I did the monitor mix for David Grisman, Tony Rice, Darol Anger and Rob Wasserman at the Paulo Soleri amphitheater. They were great people to work with and very gracious. Tony was funny, self effacing and kind. They were very different from some of the prima donnas back then. They were also pulling on some insane weed :D
Great night under the stars with amazing music!

Wow. Another massive loss.
From his official FB page just now:
It is with great sadness we announce that on February 9th, Chick Corea passed away at the age of 79, from a rare form of cancer which was only discovered very recently.
Throughout his life and career, Chick relished in the freedom and the fun to be had in creating something new, and in playing the games that artists do.
He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and a great mentor and friend to so many. Through his body of work and the decades he spent touring the world, he touched and inspired the lives of millions.
Though he would be the first to say that his music said more than words ever could, he nevertheless had this message for all those he knew and loved, and for all those who loved him:
“I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun.
“And to my amazing musician friends who have been like family to me as long as I’ve known you: It has been a blessing and an honor learning from and playing with all of you. My mission has always been to bring the joy of creating anywhere I could, and to have done so with all the artists that I admire so dearly—this has been the richness of my life.”
Chick’s family will of course appreciate their privacy during this difficult time of loss.

Well that sucks.......

Larry Flint (the publisher of Hustler) died too, if anyone cares.
Chick = an uplifting positive force in the world with great music to raise our spirits and challenge our intellect
Flint = a douchebag porn pusher

Unfortunately I think that it is about time for all of us to take another look at our concert bucket list and make an effort to seek out those shows while the artists are still on the road.

Paul Cotton guitarist for Poco died last evening. In April the groups founder Rusty Young passed. Poco was arguably the finest country rock band out there. Rusty began Poco after Buffalo Springfield disbanded. Paul cam to Poco after leaving Illinois Speed Press. Poco was considered the first true country rock band paving the way for groups like the Eagles, Pure Prarie League etc. Sadly they never achieved commercial success on the level of other bands. It was always said Poco was too rock for country and to country for rock. Paul and Rusty are now trading off riffs in heaven RIP Paul and Rusty.

Poco is one of my favorites of all time. This is sad to see. So many of us geezers are leaving this earthly coil...

‘Good Feelin’ To Know’ album by Poco was a favorite of mine. It was in constant rotation in the house growing up. I never understood why it wasn’t more popular. RIP Paul.
I guess I’ll give it a listen later today.

This is almost becoming a daily routine. Yesterday we lost Mike Finnegan, Hammond B3 virtuoso. Mike played with Jimi Hendrix, Janis, Cher, CSNY, Dave Mason, Bonnie Raitt and many others. He was considered one of the most soulful modern day B3 players around. I was fortunate to see him many times as he toured with Dave Mason throughout the 70's. Take a listed to the live version of Goin Down Slow (Dave Mason Certified Live). RIP Mike

Don Everly passed yesterday at the age of 84.

You are correct.
The song was ordered banned from Boston radio stations by the Catholic archbishop of Boston in 1957 (the power of the church in Boston was incredible back then). The lyrics were supposedly too suggestive.

I just learned that Rick Craig of Selah Audio had a fatal heart attack.
I've known Rick for about 25 years. We didn't always see eye to eye on audio, but he was always kind and a great guy to talk to.
I will miss him greatly 😓

I only knew of Rick from AC. The seemingly rapid fire nature of deaths on our RIP thread has been a bit difficult to follow. It reminds me that it wasn’t seemingly that long ago when I met a young, vibrant AJ Conti of Basis at CES and then he was gone from a heart attack.
-
Rick had his supporters and detractors, but one thing I know personally- the guy could sure put together a crossover. Sorry for the loss to his family and friends.

George Frayne, the main man in front of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, died on September 30, 2021.
They never had much popularity, but for some reason I really enjoyed them.
They were the first concert I ever went to- my older sister was going with three of her friends and I tagged along. I was around 12 or so; they were smoking pot on the way to the show at Farmingdale State College, and I just couldn’t believe I was there.
Three faves albums:
‘Lost In The Ozone’
‘Live From Deep In The Heart Of Texas’
‘We’ve Got A Live One Here!’

Lloyd Walker- A legend in audio. I use his High Definition Links ( a zobel network of sorts I believe) on my speakers to great effect.
Made an amazing turntable too- a bit out of my price range.
https://positive-feedback.com/audio-discourse/lloyd-walker-of-walker-audio/
-
Another one gone. Lloyd's help was invaluable when I was first setting up my Maplenoll Ariadne TT. Even though he was not the mgfr. of the table he knew everything about my turntable including tweaks and modifications to the design. He also took the time to explain all of the ins and outs of air bearing TTs. We had a number of very interesting conversations on the phone. It was hard to believe that he had the time to talk to a non-customer about
about a TT he didn't manufacture.
We have lost a fine man and gold mine of very valuable information about TT design.

According to the article he "cheated death" on two previous occasions. I read of his passing on the Torrent sites. If you would like some of their music I'm happy to share. This is what I've already listened to over the years. In all likelihood I have one or two more shows queued not listed here because I haven't listened to it yet. I always make it a point to play new (to me) music in honor so to speak of a dead musician. I shall do so today.

Jim Gordon - drummer for Derek and the Dominoes, Bonnie & Delaney and many others.
He died in the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He was schizophrenic and was incarcerated for murdering his mother during a psychotic break.. Great drummer. Tragic life.

RIP Gordon Lightfoot :(
And Randy Bachman
Tim, not Randy, according to news reports anyway .
I'm familiar with BTO and Guess Who music, but not nearly as much as Grateful Dead. Besides the fact that I'm a phan of Gordon Lightfoot, and having seen him in concert once late in his career at the Beacon Theater, the Grateful Dead cover one, and only one Lightfoot song - Early Morning Rain. Phil Lesh is lead vocalist. Every Grateful Dead version of EMR is absolutely spectacular.

Tomorrow I'll be playing a spectacular Ike and Tina Turner show.
-
Yes indeed. There is a local radio station where I live that plays nothing but oldies but goodies. For the last couple of weeks before her death, he was playing a lot of Ike and Tina. It was one particular cut where she sings and he speaks. Great song but I have no idea what the title is…

Ed Ames has passed away. He sang some very romantic/thought provoking songs.
He was the one associated with the famous tomahawk throw on the Johnny Carson Show.

Hong Kong/American singer best known as the singer of "A Love Before Time" from the Ang Lee movie Crouching, Tiger Hidden Dragon and the voice and singer in the Mandarin version of the Disney film, Mulan.
Saw her live many years ago in a free mini concert.

RIP Tony Bennett :(
-
Wow, what a singer. I don't think I've ever heard a Tony Bennett song that wasn't just amazingly well done.
I was a kid when Mom would put "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" on the Emerson console. He was part of my musical education from the earliest days. He won't be missed, because he's not gone...he's still on my turntable, singing great songs.

Bernie Marsden - guitarist, song writer, singer and warm, kind human being.
Gayle and I had the opportunity to share a dinner table with him on a JB Blues Cruise. A fine time of talking a little music and a lot of life.
The Madden/Coverdale "Here I Go Again" is a true classic as is the bark of The Beast Les Paul he wielded artfully.

Tung Sol KT120
It should have a potential to output up to 120 wpc, but it coasts along putting out about 30. Not sure why they made that choice. Tubes should last longer than I do.

They are operating in their most linear manner. It ain't always about power, it's often about finesse.

Scott,
What is that central tower looking thing in the center? It appears <to me> to be some sort of radiator to dispel heat.
-
The power transformer? All transformers on this unit are Lundahl.
-
I'm sad to report that one of the most respected audio techs, Bill Thalmann, passed away about a month ago. This guy probably fixed and upgraded more Technic SP-10 II's and III's than anyone. He was generous with his time on the phone, and had a mastery of classic old gear. Two of my turntables bear his stamp. Don't know anyone that knew more about direct drive turntables.
Good techs are a rare breed and getting rarer.
-

It doesn't look like a transformer to me. I see three transformers across the back. The object I'm asking about sits directly in front of the rear center transformer. It is almost purple with a white (or silver?) horizontal bar at top.

OK. Yep those are heat sinks. Beats me what they are doing exactly.

They operate as chimneys. What you can't see are the through holes in the circuit board underneath the heat sinks. As things heat up, the differing thermal coefficients cause aluminum to heat quicker than the steel chassis. Heat rises. Heat differential convection will create a cooling flow through the chimney.
Thermodynamics.
