Most of us here have officially entered the "OLD" category. Of course we prefer the music we grew up with, or something today that is similar in style. That includes the decade after we matured, because we all have an open mind, ya' know. My kids prefer the music they heard (as well as some of my old stuff, because they heard it from me) but seem to be open to things that came out during their 20's too. So kids that are teenagers now have a lot more options besides radio. Their exposure is wider, if not better content, at least they have more choices.
So, what am I getting at?
I play and record with a bunch of international musical hobbiests on a site called Bandlab. We generally play rock and roll and some Motown and light jazz. When we collaborate on a song we are thrilled when we get about 1000 plays, But there are also "pop" and "hip hop" artists on that site. You know how many listens they receive? Let's just say that 1000 plays is a poor showing for them.
I have 125 followers on that site. Many of my fellow collaborators have between 100-500 followers. Hip Hop artists have thousands of followers. So what genre of music is most popular? Sure, Bandlab may not be completely representative of the world as a whole, but for a community of international musicians and musical artists I think it speaks loudly to where the focus is.
