I like the last (title) track on this one best, it is modern. Much of it is ancient music. But it all sounds beautiful.

Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique - Varujan Kojian/Utah Symphony Orchestra

Of course the music, the sound and the performance are first rate, but there is an interesting story behind the packaging of this 45 RPM LP release. In order to get the kinds of dynamics that Keith Johnson wanted on this album the music had to be spread over 3 LP sides. Rather than leave the 4th side blank Johnson figured that most audiophiles would play the music on side 3 most often (March to the Scaffold and Dream of a Witches' Sabbath) so he pressed that music onto both side 3 & side 4. He also used this same technique on later RR LP releases.

In addition to their first rate classical catalog RR has put out a number of top shelf jazz releases.
This one features an all-star group of musicians playing some real dynamite swing jazz.

Wilson Audiophile records (Yes this is the same company that makes Wilson speakers) put out two albums with Lowell Graham and the National Symphonic Winds. Superb sonics (I think the super wide dynamics were designed to show off the capabilities of his speakers) and great performances Be careful the first time you listen because they start of with fairly soft passages that have lulled more than a few people to turn up the volume only to damage their equipment when the big peaks came along.

But both are very cool albums to show off a high end system.

Strictly Sousa: Jerry Junkin/Dallas Wind Symphony

John Philip Sousa is a folk hero of sorts in these parts. He lived and did much of his writing in Port Washington , NY which is only a few miles from where I live now and is the town tat my wife grew up in.

This CD presents John Philip Sousa music given the Keith Johnson, Reference Recordings treatment. Need I say more?

Sousa is awesome. Our town band is run by a serious Sousa afficianado, Stuart Holomon.  The 4th of July concerts are always very stimulating, both musically and from all the great stories he tells about the history of the music.

Mephisto & Co. : Eije Oue/Minnesota Orchestra

Outstanding orchestral disc. Night on Bald Mountain and The Sorcerer's Apprentice are worth the price of admission on their own.  8)

Yes, that's a great album. I never ripped that CD so I forgot I had it - thanks for the reminder. I like to play it loudly on Halloween night.
