All-Star Orchestra
« on: October 08, 2013, 04:43:48 PM »
A new weekly classical music show on PBS TV. Featuring the All-Star Orchestra, made up of the best classical musicians from orchestra's across USA. Conducted by Gerard Schwarz. Playing classic favorites on a different theme each episode.

I saw "The New World" episode #3 tonight, performing Dvorak's complete 9th Symphony and another modern piece. The orchestra is great, the photography is great (HD), the sound is great. The conducting is a little indulgent, as expected from any commercially successful modern conductor dealing an old war horse. Play to the bucks.  But it wasn't too bad, and the video dominates the experience making it overall a very positive experience.

Check it out!

The series of concerts will be released on Naxos DVDs this fall. No sign of it yet.   There is a lot of compression on the TV show. I hope the DVD sound is better. It is Naxos so it should be better. The cameras reveal a lot of very expensive mics onstage.

I saw the Shostakovich Symphony 5 episode tonight. It was very good.
