Title: anti virus software
Post by: BobM on August 04, 2011, 01:23:19 PM
My McAfee subscription is running out tomorrow and I'm loath to renew it. I'm not sure it ever stopped anything. I still caught malware and had to deal with that. Norton is probably worse from all accounts.

What are you using and recommending in its place?

Thanks,
Bob

BitDefender 2012 is supposed to be highly rated.

I'm using BitDefender 2010 and it has worked very well.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free and highly rated.  I use it on all my machines and like it very much.  (certainly better than that awful bloatware McAffee) It's a shame Microsoft can't include it with Windows by default for fear of antitrust action.

I gotta say - I ran the gamut of all "free" AV software with varying degrees of success, but MS Security Essentials has proven rock-solid and has yet to allow any malicious software installs.   I've not always been a fan of MS, but this product rocks.  While it's not automatically included in Windows, it is totally free, easy to install and takes care of its own updates automatically as long as your machine resides on the Internet most of the time. :thumb:

Thanks guys. Downloaded and installed MS Security Essentials and uninstalled McAfee.
