Way cool, Bill! Keep the pix on your progress comin', along with a step by step of what you used and how you put it all together! I have an almost identical end table in my garage that's crying out to be converted like yours! :thumb:
-
That looks good Bill. Is that a homemade vac wand? Are you gonna use that monster shop vac in the background? aa
Keep the pictures coming!
Thanks!
-
Coolio man. We got a LP cleaner girl instead.

Thanks guys, :thumb:
Yes Rich the suction wand is nothing more than 1/2 schedule 40 PVC. Two 5 1/2 pieces with a 90. I drilled several small holes on each end clamped it into a Black & Decker workmate and then cut by hand a slot using a hacksaw blade. I used a piece of 1/2 dowel and silicone to plug the end. Then I spray painted the Masonite and the wand with metallic paint that's is ''supposed'' to be good with plastic. We shall see. I'm going to use a Shop Vac mini underneath with a toggle switch up top to operate the vac. I need to come up with a good solution to attach the wand to the vac. I'm sure I'll come up with something.......Bill
Thanks to AVnerdguy from A/C for the donation of the Pioneer platter

You're a freakin' genius!
Or insane.
Definately one or the other.

I think a 1/2" to 1" coupler might work to connect the shop vac pipe to the suction wand. The ID of the 1" coupler is 1.3" and the vac hose OD is 1.25". Add a little duct tape. ;)
In my experience, soft PVC takes any kind of paint really well. That's the same color as the amp stand, right?
-
Thanks Rich I'll pick one up and give it a try
The amp stand was Black Night Metallic. This color is called Oil Rubbed Bronze and is Rust-oleum's Universal Advanced Formula paint and primer in one.

Do you get uniform suction along the wand? Are the holes uniform or do they vary in size to accommodate varying air velocity along the wand?
It very well could be too short to make much of a difference. Just a wondering.

I made the wand but haven't hooked a vac to it yet. As much suction as will be used through such a small opening I'm thinking the small diff. won't matter.

Another thought, based on experience with my VPI 16.5 ...
The VPI uses a geared transmission to turn the platter, and a good thing it does, because when you really need to apply a little pressure to the brushes it does indeed strain the turning of the platter. You might want to include a clamp on yours that will allow you to hand turn the platter when you need to, or to at least hold it still while you run the brush back and forth over a really dirty record surface.
Lookin good though, and plenty of top space to hold the ancillary equipment and such.

Hi Bob,
I plan on a hockey puck with a handle I'll work on that this weekend plus a extra wand for a backup
-
Thanks Rich, good call on the 1'' PVC coupler w/ a 1/2 flush bushing. Some Silicone and black electrical tape "bingo"

He compared 3 power cords and measured for machine noise. He also tried power conditioner.
Oh, and rollo will like this, he uses Hifituning fuse in it!
I can't even imagine how clean his records must be.

Man this whole project is awesome. I wish I had these DIY skills.
One other thing though. That stock outlet will not due. It requires at least a Porter Port Hubbell based outlet to get the best power to your cleaner.
-
Are you going to cryo it too?
-
needs to be connected to a regenerated power with dedicated 20amp circuit. is that mini shopvac quite enough if not it needs to be modified before it is ready
sorry could not resist :-P

This is not as hard as you might think. In the end it should cost $70 or less. Jump in with both feet and give it a try you just might surprise yourself.

Did you try it yet Bill? Video? and don't edit out the swearing. ;)

Yes I did Rich with a beat up LP to see how it sucked water off.
It did just fine. I need to put velvet on the wand and make some sort of weight to hold the LP down.
Now can you help the technically challenged how do I do a video ?? I'll ask my daughter see's pretty good with that kinda stuff.
-
Damned if I know...
Congrats!
-
how do I do a video
As in where to store it? You can create your own channel/account on youtube, post it there and then put a link here...
Is that what you were asking?

My wife tells me my daughter can handle it. All I have to do is get a 22 year old to stay in one place long enough to help me.
-
Good luck w/that.
-
In my house technical questions like that don't get referred to the CIO, but rather the TIO (Teenage Information Officer).

Awesome!!! That rocks! Thanks for the video Bill!

Congrats on the inventiveness Bill, right down to the retro 'knob on the steering wheel' thingy. :thumb:
-
Ha ha you mean the little glass knob it's actually very old. It came off a pair of old inside window shutters. I found in a box of odds and ends. I must say it was a fun project

Just out of curiosity ... you have a VPI cleaner, so why did you undertake this project? Just because you could?
-
For irony you can store the VPI in the cabinet below. haha

A friend is getting into vinyl for the first time it's for him.
He is coming by on Saturday to pick it up.
