Simone Dinnerstein's Bach 1052
« on: August 26, 2018, 11:05:38 PM »
In my search for Bach piano recordings and new interpretations, I came across Simone Dinnerstein's 1052 interpretation from Simone Dinnerstein, Kammerorchester der Staatskapelle, Berlin, (https://www.amazon.com/Bach-Strange-Beauty-Simone-Dinnerstein/dp/B004DURSDK).

A Julliard dropout and a student of Serkin's son, she also has the distinction of releasing a self-financed recording of the Goldberg Variations, her career and background are interesting to say the least.

Very "unique" playing. Her interpretation of Bach has also been described as "too self-indulgent." I would agree. Perhaps I've been spoiled by hearing Gould's, which is, to my ears, the definitive version of the 1052.  Some clever marketing going on here. At one point her music was outselling the White Stripes on iTunes!  :o Baroque music played romantic-style, as one reviewer puts it.  "Fresh and refreshing", according to one listener who liked it, dismissed as "bombastic and boring" by another!

Not my cup of tea, but I applaud her efforts to keep this kind of music alive.
