Songs you wish were shorter (Prog Rock)
« on: May 05, 2018, 03:30:49 PM »
My three- and I will admit this might be heresy-
Echoes- Pink Floyd
Musical Box- Genesis
Get Ready- Rare Earth
Plus this...
Moon Child- King Crimson

I’m not talking a three minute radio edit, but each of these are great 7 or 8 minute songs. Maybe not
a 10 or 20 minute indulgence. I know only a few prog rock fans will know these, but opinions?

I’ll say straight out that I’m a music fan first,  and not much on lyrics, and perhaps the lyrics flesh out what I’m missing,
so I’ll give Musical Box a Pass, but really, for my tastes, the interludes don’t do the music justice.

Any fellow sufferers, or maybe a different opinion?

For what it’s worth, Autobahn by Kraftwerk is on now, and for me, the entire 20 minutes or so is enjoyable.

Have a fine Saturday night...

And here I thought the song “El Paso” by Marty Robbins at 4:38 was long. Geez, shows my age and that I’m out of touch a bit. I have never had a long attention span for music and usually  prefer songs that are 3:30 or shorter.
I realize that I may suffer from musical ADD, but that’s what it is 😳

You should listen to the songs I mentioned. I feel a whole lot of nothing in between amazing beginnings and endings. ‘Supper’s Ready’ by Genesis is a perfect example of a fabulous, no filler, 20 minute song. Maybe just me...

Can't say much about the list so far. Love what's listed as is. The one stuck in my head now is Inagadavida (spelling?) that just never ends.

Great drum solo takes up some time on In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, the louder the better. But yeah, that song could be tightened up too. It’s the artist’s prerogative I suppose. I could not create two notes of music myself, so please take my complaint for what it’s worth- not much.

I think some prog rock is also ambient music at some points during some songs and I am okay with that. I also grew up listening
classical music including baroque music."Long" within this genre doesn't bother me most of the time. When "Tommy" by the Who came along I was receptive to concept albums and rock operas, as well as prog rock. Pink Floyd and Yes were right up my alley as well as New Age, Space Music and Ambient which mostly came along some where in the late 80s.
I find that the immersive circumambient imaging which creates a virtual 360° soundscape to be very entertaining as well as relaxing. Obviously these are artificial virtual realities which cannot be found in the real world. In many cases these genres can ask a lot from the playback system in the max SPL, frequency bandwidth, and the imaging depts. When this occurs, the album makes for good test material if that is a priority.
I also have no problem with any of the listed songs.

Any opera by Wagner.  His is the only music where I've ever walked out of a live performance.

I dare say, J.S. Bach's 'St. Matthews Passion' is a long revered work that could stand to be a little livelier and shorter, at least for my taste. Four solo singers with meager orchestral accompaniment to keep them in tune and on score, singing the very simplest Bach melodies, about the glory of Christ, in German, for 3 hours, with no intermission. I assume St. John's Passion is more of the same, but I'll never know.

We have a small neighborhood swimming pool across the street, which used to have teenagers climbing the fence to drink beer in there at night. They asked us to call the cops whenever we saw someone in there after hours, eventually they had to up the fence, etc. I used to tell them to just get a small (and well protected) speaker to stream St Matthews on loop whenever the pool was closed. No serious loiterer could tolerate it.
