I used index cards for years.  I now use one of those inexpensive Lucite blocks with lines etched in.  Put the block behind the tonearm, set a flashlight to the side and the Lucite block will light up with internal illumination.  Then it's easier to see how the tonearm aligns.  I guess if the tonearm is tapered... buy a USB microscope and try to guess the angle of the stylus?
