help for my Tang Band 8 inch W8-1808 single drivers

(1/3) > >>

Nick B:
There’s another thread regarding my single driver quest. Right now with less than 20 hours, the Tang Bands sound a bit thin. I’ve heard them broken in at a friends house and they did sound wonderful. There was sufficient bass for me. My reference for bass is simply Jennifer Warnes song Way Down Deep. I don’t listen to pipe organ etc. The TBs were in a box rather than an open baffle that I’m experimenting with. Assuming that the thin sound remains, I would like to explore other options.

Would it be possible to add a 10 inch driver to the same enclosure, arrive at a fixed crossover point and have them driven by one amp?

I’m looking for simplicity. No amps in each cabinet driving the subs, no extra wires, no additional weight. My current speakers are 65 lbs and I don’t want to approach that
Thanks,
Nick

Rather than a full xover what about trying to figure out where the current drivers are rolling off and then just build a lpw pass filter to bring in the woofers a a point that would fill in whats missing. That  would feed the full signal to the Tang Bands, thus maintainig the intergitry of the single driver sound while at the same time giving them a little help on the lower frequency range you feel is a bit deficient in the OB configuration

Just a thought.........

I assume you are running the speaker connected directly to your amp. You will need to add 3-4dB of baffle step compensation to boost the bass, and probably impedance correction to contour the treble too.

You could apply these equalizations using the Roon DSP. Roon doesn't have a specific BSC filter, but you can get by with low shelf (6dB slope.)  Start at 400Hz, +4dB amplitude, slide the freq up and down to taste.

That is a nice, simple idea. I have a friend who might be able to figure that out. OB is so simple, but I can certainly opt for a different cabinet design. OB is my wife’s preference, but I think she’s flexible with other options as long as a small footprint is retained.

Yes, Rich, direct to amp. I just read up a bit on BSC. I’ll give Roon a try later today.
