It is Karls speaker system
15 inch Field coil woofers
Edgarhorn with JBL 375's with original rolled aluminum diaph's

Going to play with them for a while with his amps and preamp that he built as well as the crossover. He also built the bass cabinets

Pretty handy guy, and he actually has an ear!

burning everything in, hasn't been played in years
100 pound each  300B mono's driving the bass
45's driving the mids

even with a shitty TT it sounds great, oh...the potential
forget the shouty horns you might think of, this ain't that, delicious mids

A lot of misconceptions about horns... they were the "cat's meow" when voiced & when mated with great tube equipment in the 30's, 40's, 50's & 60's... then came solid state sand which made the horns sound shouty & crappy...aka the Phase Linear Days (pretty simple - Garbage In = Garbage Out!). Horns are so revealing & transparent that they must be fed good sources or your "weak link" is quickly revealed (take this from my experiences)... Also, being so efficient has some drawbacks as well... your sources need to be damn quiet at idle & between notes! Took me over 10 years to find the right combo's... & of course the Nervosa really never ends...

When done right, WOW is the word!, especially with dynamics, both micro & macro...

Enjoy them buddy! I want to hear them soon!

That's right Pete, SS amps are much more of a voltage source than tubes which have some current drive in them. Voltage drive can make a driver sound shouty, especially if it was designed to use tubes with higher output impedance.

Mike those look great!! I want to hear them too!

OK,
This is very different than what we are used to.
Very fast and detailed, yet wonderful tone, tremendous focus.
speed an dynamics of course, but such refinement, ordinary dynamic drivers just cant do this, they are just too slow.
The amps Karl has built are HUGE, all DHT.

I plan to have people over but I have to do it  in shifts, a large rave just can't happen at my place anymore, my wife hates them and I don't enjoy hosting large raves either.
Besides I have a small room and a small sweet spot.

One bad thing about this system is it is rather complex, wires and power cords all over the place :duh, but I guess that is what is required in this case.
When things burn in I will set some dates if people want to come over, next week the Micro Seiki will be up and running again and that will be a major improvement just in itself, and major is an understatement.

Let it all burn in and settle and we will tweak the setup and cabling

I used to not like horn speakers unti I was able to hear Triode Pete's system which I truly like. All the timeing, planning, changing, setup, etc. have payed off and his SETs make music through his speakers.

Are the horn speakers from back in the day capapable of making music when paired with SET amps?

Most people who do not like horn speakers just have not been exposed to many horns, and usually base their judgement on hearing one or  two bad horn systems.
High quality horns systems are just so different than what most have heard, and honestly how many people do we know that are crazy enough to do this?

Source is critical in a system like this. Bad source will kill a system like this, my current source is almost killing it! But one can use one's audiophile imagination and just imagine what it could be.

Right now tremendous midrange, wonderful tone with tons of detail and dynamics and such speed that makes singers sound so real, so lifelike.

I sort of understand how horn people look down on dynamic drivers. The presentation is so different and honestly....it is wonderful

I agree
Once you hear a properly setup horn system it's very difficult to go back to conventional speakers
When I grow up I want a properly setup horn system with a nice idler TT

Honestly, they were great but too complicated for my lifestyle right now.
Wires and power cords everywhere, it was just too much.

I am going much simpler these days and looking for gear with as little tubes as possible, I want the sound I want but without the expense of maintaining so many tubes. And I could never listen to SS for long. Although the Titans were really really good!
Just sold my monos off and am going to a stereo tube amp and am probably going to buy the EAR 834P with volume since I am a single source guy.

You probably will never find a dynamic speaker that can do what horns do, and most people have never heard good horns, but I need a simpler solution so I will stick with my Virgo's, they don't do everything but what they do they do well for me.

So the field coils were sold off and if anyone is interested in the horns,....make an offer

Wither thine 375s?  aa

I think they are Edgarhorn 350Hz "Salad Bowl" tractrix horns?

Karl's bass horn veneering is SIcK! Compound curves are really hard to do. Looks like old world craftsmanship. That is a work of art. Especially for someone who likes bass horns!! Are they vented also?

Aw Shit now I can't make a lowball offer...  :duh

You sold your mono blocks already? You qualify for for the lunatic asylum :-)

OK, I'll translate... do the 375s come with the horns? That will affect the price a wee bit...

The horns and drivers can be seperated if you only want one or the other, personally I would buy the salad bowls get a pair of JBL 2440 or 2441's , recharge the alnico and get berylium diaphragms and be done!

Those are beautiful speakers. Love the woodwork. I am in the camp that enjoys horns as long as the horn itself is made of wood. Plastics have no place in such an application. I once had a pair of Usher D2 speakers using the TAD driver and loved the sound of these speakers.

If those horns looked any cooler they would have icicles on them and frost around the rims.

thanks for posting the pics - i got blanks when i posted the links in the "insert image" tags.

anyway, these horns are completely unfinished; supposedly the sound would be better if i even sprayed a clear finish on them, but i never bothered; they sound pretty decent as-is.  using a deqx prolly doesn't hurt...

No gloss IMHO Doug, the room match would be ruined and they'd stick out. Do they make a satin clearcoat?

Robin
