Leonard Cohen's last performance before a 15 year break.  He left the public eye and moved to the Mount Baldy Zen Center near Los Angeles where he was ordained as a Zen Buddhist Monk in 1996, spending 5 years in seclusion.  Cohen eventually returned to the stage in 2008.

Kevin recorded this historic concert amongst a very respectful audience.  However, he did not time any of the tape flips and simply let each side run out, so there are a few cuts.  There is a change in sound during the first song, very likely caused by moving the bias setting and/or Dolby switches on the recorder.  It sounds like the recording starts off with both switches in the upper position (Normal Type I + Dolby C) and suddenly they are moved to Kevin's usual settings (Chrome Type II + Dolby off).

The Kevin Davie Memorial Series

This series is in memory of Kevin Davie who died suddenly 31 March 2016. Kevin was an avid taper & recorded many concerts mainly in Vancouver, Victoria & Toronto. All these recordings have been sourced directly from Kevin’s master cassettes. With thanks to Mary Davie, Kevin’s Mother for allowing us access to all of Kevin’s masters. This is a joint venture between DGB, Dennis Orr, Seth Meister, Leif H & John MacMillan. Kevin was a dear friend of mine & helped me greatly when I first moved to Canada in June 1994 for which I will forever be grateful. He had a great sense of humour. He was always happy to remind me of Ray Cooper’s percussion solo that I had to endure at the end of all the Eric Clapton shows I went to in the 90s (there were many!). He did an excellent job in impersonating Mr. Cooper! Kevin had a great taste in music & shared my love of the blues. We hope that you enjoy these releases & that we can continue Kevin’s legacy for many years to come. You left this world way too soon. Rest in peace my friend.

DGB

Kevin and I had plans to post some of his shows himself. After downloading and seeding torrents for a while, he needed the ratio boost! haha. He had taped and traded for years through the mail, but hadn't gone digital with his own collection yet. We had begun to work on some of his shows and had plans to do more, when we had a bit of a dust up over something silly. Sadly, we never had the chance to mend fences together before he passed. He was a good friend and I miss him a lot. Hopefully, through this series of shows, Kevin's memory can be properly honoured and that he can continue to leave a lasting legacy with the recordings that he left behind. I also hope that when I go beyond this world that my master cassette collection that I haven't gotten to will find a similar new home with trader's and collectors and fans everywhere, too...

A real nice show, but some of the track transitions were a bit rough, so I
smoothed them out, cleaned up a pop here and there, aligned to sector boundaries,
and converted to FLAC. Nothing else was done to the files. Enjoy!

Recording: NAK 300's > Sony TC-D5
Transfer: Master Cassette > Nakamichi DR-01 (azimuth adjusted) > Sound Devices USBPre2 > iZotope RX 8 / ozone 9 (mastered) > xACT 2.50 > FLAC

mjk5510 NOTES:
--Known Faults:  Missing first part of the show (~25 minutes);  "Heartbreak Beat" - joined in progress;  "President Gas" - start slightly cut
--Welcome to Volume 42 of our master series featuring the master recordings of dime member "tapetyrant". The series will predominately feature captures in the Northeast and Southern California areas. We will touch on multiple genres with a strong focus on Jazz Fusion, New Wave and Rock.
--Tapetyrant was an active taper in the 1980's and much of the 1990's before, like many of us, hanging up the mics. What he captured during that time is uniformly excellent quality and his master tapes have been safely stored, the first batch are in pristine condition. Some shows may circulate from lower generation copies but most have remained uncirculated until now and have never circulated directly from the masters.
--Prior to DAT, the heavy lifting was entirely done by a Sony D5 with NAK 300's and taping was serious business, acquiring the best seats possible and working to keep neighbors in check.
--Our second Psychedelic Furs show of the series at one of TapeTyrant's favorite taping venues, TapeTyrant rarely makes even an average tape at this venue and this is no exception however, probably being a bit too mentally prepared for the show resulted in missing the first 5 or 6 songs as the taper's old nemesis, the pause button, was mistakenly engaged.
--After this error in button management is corrected we get an excellent capture of the last hour of the show.
--Thanks as always to Goody for invaluable pitch guidance.
--Continued thanks to "tapetyrant" for doing such a great job capturing these important shows, for reaching out and entrusting me to present his excellent work for all to enjoy for decades to come. We are indebted to his generosity (tapers don't let those tapes and your hard work get lost to the ages, there are plenty of folks to get in touch with here to help get them out, we're all working to leave no tape behind).
--Artwork and samples included.

mjk5510 and tapetyrant

vanillag NOTES (1/14/2023):
--Super BIG Thanks to TapeTyrant for recording & sharing this the Psychedelic Furs 1986 show & to mjk5510 for the transfer & share & to goody for his part in the pitch process.  Absolutely appreciated & sounds super nice!!
--According to mjk5510, probably these six songs were missed:  Heartbeat;  Here Come Cowboys;  Alice's House;  Shadow In My Heart;  Highwire Days;  Heaven
--"Heartbreak Beat" is only missing a tad in the very beginning & is joined well before the first lyrics are sung
--"President Gas" is also only missing a tad in the very beginning & is joined well before the first lyrics are sung
--not sure if there was no encores played or if there is a very clever splice after "President Gas" (because on other setlists for this tour, the encores started with "Pretty In Pink")
--Pier 84 is on 12th Avenue & 44th Street. From 1981 until 1988, it served as a concert venue from the former Schaefer Music Festival. Headline acts such as the Clash, Frank Zappa, King Crimson, and Hot Tuna performed on the pier. Opened under Hudson River Park in 2006, it is the largest public pier in the park.  The pier also houses a water-themed playground, part of Hudson River Park.  In addition, Pier 84 is a stop for New York Water Taxi & has a bicycle rental shop and other businesses serving primarily tourists.
--In 1977, Dr.Pepper assumed sponsorship of the "Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park" concert series, renamed the "Dr.Pepper Central Park Music Festival". Due to residential noise complaints, this series was moved to Pier 84 on the West Side in 1981. The festival name was changed to "Dr.Pepper Music Festival" after the move away from Central Park in 1981. In 1983 Miller Brewing Company took over sponsorship with the name "Miller Time Concerts On the Pier" until 1988. In 1989 Reebok took over sponsorship of the concert series at Pier 84, renamed "Reebok Riverstage", which lasted through 1990.
--added the band members info & some more detail to the setlist
--added the ffp fingerprints to the text file
--added more detail to the venue info

strange thing cuts off on this recording, but i believe it continues at the beginning
of the cal expo show...   you can faintly hear black and blue underneath the end
of strange thing, which would happen if it were taped over the beginning of the cal
expo show...   what happens is the tape deck's erase head doesn't fully erase
what was on the tape as it recorded over it...

i think that they were using side b of the cal expo tape to record shoreline, and
when the tape ran out at shoreline they flipped the tape, recording over the
beginning of cal expo...

i have included the ending of strange thing in this file set...

Artist: Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett
Date: 03 December 2010
Location: Kahului, Maui, Hawaii
Venue: McCoy Studio Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center

Lineage: Audio Reality binaural mics > bbox > Sony RH1 (HiSP 256kbps) > Sonic Stage to PC/WAV (16/44.1) > RX9/Ozone9 > flac16

Maui's own Hutch Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt's band and others) joined the Paul & Fred Acoustic Duo for a good portion of this show.

Recording Notes: These are the original files that were seeded elsewhere back in 2010. However, for this recording, nearby clapping as well as some audience noise has been attenuated. In addition, Paul & Fred's banter between several songs was very low in volume both at the show and in the 2010 seed. Clip Gain was used to boost the between song discussions in an unobtrusive manner.

As usual, take it if you need it, if not just pass it on.

Aloha from Maui,
