3 mics on the drums, one each guitar and bass amps, keyboard direct/midi/amp mic optional, and a nice mic for the singer. A ~10 channel USB type sound card, various accessories like cables, stands, etc. Use the virtual mixing board on a good DAW. So far that's ~$5000 for good stuff, ~$4000 for cheap. Don't buy used, it is all junk at this price not good at longevity under stress. You will need isolation for a loud band, which means headphone monitoring if you are recording everybody live. 5 headphones and distribution that are easy to use (time efficient) and don't sound like shit figure $2000+.
That lets you get the singer out of the sound room. You might want just the drums in there and everyone else out, or in different rooms. Get 50ft mic cables. A big UPS is a good idea, a laptop is very handy too. Mixing is very time consuming, but it's fun if you like it.
Budget money for good musicians or you're wasting your money on the gear. It takes time to learn it all, and how to run a session. But it's fun. There are plenty of local bands that want to record for free, or cheap. $25/hour will keep you busy, as many hours as you can stand. $50/hour is pushing it without a dedicated recording space with isolation and a real board.
I buy stuff from Nate Edwards at Sweetwater.com I have been a customer for 16 years, they are excellent for good advice. He will send you a free catalog which is fun to flip through to get a feel for what's available.
