Title: New PC build - Where to put the software
Post by: mfsoa on July 05, 2016, 04:59:32 PM
I just ordered the goods for a new PC - one that'll be fast enough to put HQPlayer to good use. (I7-6700K, ASUS Sabretooth MOBO, 16G ram)

I've never used an SSD before but I intend to put Windows 10 on it.

What else goes on the SSD?  When I load dBPoweramp, or JRiver, or HQPlayer, or maybe Roon, do these guys go on the SSD or the spinning HD?

What's the rule of thumb?

Thanks!
-Mike

How big is the SSD for the boot drive?

If it is 60GB or bigger, it is much faster than the hard drive for loading programs.

You want to point the Roon metadata db to the SSD. The Roon Core/Server application can run wherever you normally put program files. The music files can then go anywhere local or NAS.

I assume that you will be using an SSD for the boot drive and a regular HDD for everything else. Be sure that you relocate you swapfile and all of you libraries over to the HDD drive or your data files and temp files will end up chewing through the SSD space and itis a bear to rearrange things after the SSD is all clogged up.

I learned that one the hard way.

Thanks for the tips  :thumb:

Tom, how does one change the swapfile location to the HDD?

It's a 500 GB SSD so plenty of room if I do end up putting some extra stuff on it.

I assume you want to have the Roon metadata db on the SSD for speed?

Control Panel --> System and Security --> System --> Advance System Settings --> Advanced --> Performance Settings --> Advance --> Virtual Memory --> Change

Select C: Drive and click on No page file and click on set
Select the external drive letter and select system managed size and click on set

Reboot.

I am not 100% what are the pros and cons of using custom v/s system managed.  If you system has lots of memory and you are not planning to use RAMDisk to hold HQPlayer and Roon software you might be able to get away not using any pagefile.

Yes Roon performs much better in searching, info retrieval with metadata db on the SSD.
