Hifi Values (or fads) of yesteryear
« on: December 14, 2010, 07:01:20 AM »
Remember the hot items over the years?  Certain 'killers' that were so cheap and so good it blew people's minds?  Then everyone jumped on it and made up their own minds?  I was trying to think back to when these things happened and thought it would be fun to compile a list of what was hot this year.. and maybe the past few.

Something like:
2002: Fancy Power cord market exploded
2003: Pioneer DVD player transports, Art dio dac, M80 IC's, Chris V Cat5 cables, Bybees, 8th nerve
2004: Digital receiver craze: Panasonic XR-45, JVC ES1 and F10, Sharp SD EX111 and SD SH11
2005:
2006:
2007:
2008:
2009:
2010:

Anyone want to fill in the blanks?
I really enjoy listening to music.

Hiya Carl,

I'm not sure of the years but these would definitely fit on your list;

- Squeezebox in all it's incarnations
- the 'cheap and cheerful' $175 class D amp over at AC. That tread is up to 115 pages.
- I'm sure several DACs would fit into your list too.
- No doubt you could add Zu and Emerald Physics to the list too

...more as I think about them

oh, what was that thread about the Gravity Well of a death star (or something)?

The confusion is understandable.....a number a people would rather face a Death Star than listen to the Dark Star.

HD DVD officially 'died' March of '08 when Toshiba announced they were getting out of the market. I bought mine XMASS of '07, I think that was the height of sales as prices had started to come down, and sold it late '08 to get a BD DVD player.

1990 Audible Illusions releases the Modulus 2D, which sounded damn good for under a grand.  So, OK, later it became known as "The Tube Eater," but it still sounds great.

I think the big item of 2009 was the $6 listing fee on Audiogon.

Promitheus TVC passive preamp anyone?

That might just about cover 2006 and 2007, IIRC.

I was wondering if the Lightspeed might pick up the trend where that left off, but it hasn't happened.
