Ruby Braff: The Concord Jazz Heritage Series

CD

I had never heard any of Braff's work before, but I have been very happy with the other discs in this series, so when I saw this one at PREX I decided to take a chance.

Turns out that this is a really good disc from both a musical and a SQ basis.

Can be had on Amazon for under a buck.

Affirmative.

You've got some good stuff going today, I grabbed a few $1 Concord Jazz lps of folks I never heard of, liked them all.

And 'GO' is quickly becoming one of my favs.

How are the Byrd and Chambers titles?

Tom inspired me to throw on this $1 fav, though I wasn't going to do any vinyl for a few days till the new Teles broke in. Oh well.........

I liked the Bryrd a lot. It is a live album that really gives you that small club feel.

The first cut on the Chambers was a little weak, but the rest of the album was sold from there out.

This minty original EmArcy deep groove pressing features Pete Rugolo, who was Stan Kenton's right hand man, leading a 22 piece orchestra performing some Rugolo originals and a few standards.  These are progressive jazz arrangements and won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Here's an amusing quote from the liner notes on the back cover:

"A hi-fi bug is a male animal, usually male and frequently American, that believes the music sounds sweeter because he owns a tweeter, and feels a little bit aloofer if he also has a woofer.
"The genus hi-fi anthropos, along with several lesser breeds, is known to exist comfortably on a diet of music like Pete Rugolo's.  It is fitting, therefore, that Pete's first album for release on the EmArcy label is dedicated to this interesting species, to whom fine sounds splendidly reproduced are the stuff of life."

Original 1959 Contemporary deep groove mono pressing. Awesome record.  Highly recommended if you can find a copy.  If not OJC has issued it on CD.

Tom posted this title a few pages back and it reminded me that there was a gap to fill in my jazz collection.  I have the MJQ Prestige recordings but nothing from their Atlantic catalog.  So I found myself several MJQ titles on minty vintage Atlantic vinyl, priced between $14 and $19 each.  Well worth it.  Thanks Tom!
